Dr. Jacob Sieck was longtime veterinarian

Dr. Jacob Sieck, 77, of Selby, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society of Selby.

His funeral service was held Monday, April 16, 2012, at the Selby United Methodist Church with Pastor Elizabeth Jassmann leading the service.

Interment, with military graveside rites by the Frederick Schauer American Legion Post No. 100 of Selby, followed at Selby Memorial Gardens. Organist was Bev Sawinsky and ushers were Keith Lemburg and Everett Russell.

Jacob William Sieck, son of Martha (Tisdall) and Arthur D. Sieck, was born Feb. 8, 1935, at Selby. He was raised on the family farm one and a half miles south of Selby. He attended Selby Public School, graduating with the SHS Class of 1953. Jake was a good athlete and participated in all high school athletics as well as Junior Legion Baseball where he played catcher. He then went on to South Dakota State University in Brookings where he earned a four-year degree.

Jake served his country in the United States Army, being inducted Sept. 6, 1956. He was honorably discharged on June 6, 1958, and resumed his schooling at the University of Minnesota where he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1962. He then worked for Dr. Nold in Gettysburg for one year. In 1964, he relocated to Bowdle where he established Jacob W. Sieck Veterinary Services.

After 47 years of service to the region, Dr. Sieck retired and moved to Selby on Oct. 1, 2011. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor on Nov. 9, 2011. Jake enjoyed hunting and fishing. He very much enjoyed spending time with his nieces and nephews.

Dr. Sieck is survived by three brothers, Darrell (Deloris) Sieck of Selby, Wallace (Nancy) Sieck of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Roy (Jana) Sieck of Aberdeen; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his father on Dec. 11, 1975, and his mother on March 24, 2006.

Honorary bearers were Lloyd Voller of Bowdle, Kimberly and Kelly Cordova of Orange, Texas, Kathryn Chase of McIntosh, and Kylie Sieck of Neenah, Wis.
Casket bearers were Jason Sieck of Neenah, Brian Sieck of Walker, Bill Chase of McIntosh, and Doug Sieck, Blake Friend, and Chuck Birkholt all of Selby.
