Records fall at Rotary/Tiger Relays

What a difference a year makes! After the 2011 Rotary/Tiger Relays had to be cancelled due to snow, Friday was a perfect day for a track and field meet. The athletes were as cooperative as the weather as meet records were broken during the day.

“It was a really good day,” said coach Rhonda Frederick.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers played a big part in the record-breaking, setting four new Rotary/Tiger standards.
The Tiger discus throwers kept right on the pace they have been setting all spring.

Daniel Roberts threw more than 190 feet for the third time in four meets. His best throw went 190 feet, 11 inches to break the record of Mobridge state champion Billy Hardcastle, who went 159-9 in 2005. Roberts made it a daily double by winning the shot put with a state-qualifying throw of 51-10.5. Roberts won the shot put by 13 feet and the discus by an outrageous 79 feet.

Steph Gemar swept the throws too, but made her signature event the most memorable. Gemar went 131-8 in the discus to break the old record of 110-7.5 set by Amanda Madden of Campbell County in 2006. Gemar’s shot put distance of 31-10.5 was more than a foot better than the rest of the field. Her discus win was by a dominating 36 feet.

The boys’ 800-meter relay did not quite match their fastest time of the season, but did run the third fastest time in Class A this year in winning the race at one minute, 31.78 seconds. Austin Borah, Peyton Friesz, Cody Schaefbauer and Bailley Friesz smoked the old record of 1:35.12 set by Faulkton in 1998.

Kass Keller came up two hundredths of a second short of qualifying for state, but was more than fast enough to set a new record in the 200-meter dash. Keller sprinted to a time of 27.12 seconds to blow away the field and blow the candles out on the old record. Lacy Schurr of Edmunds Central was the record holder. Schurr ran a 27.54 in 2005. In the event she has already qualified for state, Keller left the field behind to win the 400 at 1:03.96.

Kristi Mettler of Timber Lake and the Herreid-Selby Area boys’ 400-meter relay team not only had record-setting performances, but also moved to the top of the Class B rankings with their respective performances.

Mettler added more than a foot to the old triple jump record. Landing at 34-8, Mettler now has a one-inch lead in the Class B standings over Kellie Winckler of Andes Central. She took down the old record of 33-7 set by Angie Quaschnick in 1999. The Lady Panther had a three-win day taking first in the long jump and the 100.

The Herreid-Selby Area 400-meter relay team blew past four previously ranked teams to claim the top spot in Class B. The Wolverines ran a 45.35 to take out the old record of 45.95 set by Stanley County in 1998. Sitting atop the Class B standings are Nick Larson, Austin Iverson, Derek Dumdie and Cooper Schaefbauer.

While no measurable record was set in the boys’ 200-meter dash, a record of sorts did happen when Mobridge-Pollock runners finished 1-2-3 with all three runners qualifying for state. All three were members of the 800-meter relay team. Borah won the race at 23.12. Bailley Friesz was second at 23.12 and Schaefbauer was third at 23.24. Borah added a second track win with an 11.35-second 100-meter dash. He picked up a field win by leaping 19-1 in the long jump.
The Tigers earned one more relay win. Mason Keller, Cody Hanson, Lukas Schwieters and Jason Hill teamed to win the 3200. The Tigers beat Standing Rock by nearly four seconds after the Warriors had beaten the Tigers by 10 seconds at the season-opening Early Bird Meet.

The Tigers scored 151 points to win the boys division. Herreid-Selby was second with 126. Linton-HMB took third with 96.
The Lady Tigers had four more wins. Cassi Heumiller ran a 2:34.56 to win the 800, beating teammate Kayleigh Henderson, who ran a 2:44.6. Daysia Wiederholt won the 3200 with a time of 13:30.75. She finished 20 seconds ahead of Mataya Harrison of Standing Rock.

The Lady Tigers won the 1600 and 3200-meter relays. Heumiller, Callie Slater, Maranda Wagner and Keller ran away from the field for a 16-second win in the 1600. Heumiller, Slater, Ashton Wiederholt and Daysia Wiederholt paced to a 10-second win in the 3200. Herreid-Selby Area took second in both races.

The Mobridge-Pollock girls finished in third place in a very tight division. Herreid-Selby Area and Linton-HMB tied for first place with 114 points each. The Lady Tigers were just two points back with 112.

“The girls ran really well,” said Frederick. “They just need to keep moving forward with their times.”
Herreid-Selby Area had a successful day with nine more wins. Austin Iverson won both hurdles races. Dakota Thorstenson and Haylee Biel combined to sweep the high hump and Derek Dumdie won the triple jump. The boys won the medley relay while the girls won the 400 and medley relays.

Linton-HMB used depth for its points. The girls did not win an event. The only event the boys won was James Vetter taking the 800.

Dale Chasing Hawk of Wakpala won twice, taking the 1600 and 3200.

Courtney Bubach of Strasburg won both girls’ hurdle races and met the North Dakota state-qualifying mark in the 100-meter hurdles.

Lydia Eagle of McIntosh gave her school a win in the 1600.

Standing Rock won twice with Elijah Strong Heart winning the 400 and running the anchor leg of the winning 1600-meter relay team.
