Track team takes down best of the west

What looked like a miserable day weather-wise turned into a day of success, career bests and yet another school record for the Tiger track team at the Black Hills Track Classic in Sturgis on Saturday.

“It was pretty grim when we were leaving at 5 a.m.,” said coach Rhonda Frederick. “It was pouring rain all the way, plus snow. I was wondering what we were getting ourselves into.”

The weather turned out to be passable with light rains during the day. By the time the 1600-meter relay came around, the weather was just right for the Tigers to knock a full second off their Class A-leading time and lower yet another team record. Bailley Friesz, Austin Borah, Peyton Friesz and Cody Schaefbauer teamed to run the race in 3 minutes, 30.6 seconds. It wipes out their own record of 3:31.64, which they set at the Big Dakota Conference Meet. Runner-up Custer was nearly seconds behind. Second in state Vermillion has a season best 3:31.3.

The Tigers teamed to win three of the five relays. The same four ran the 800-meter at 1:31.28 to beat Spearfish by nearly four seconds. Borah, Schaefbauer, Peyton Friesz and Jason Hill won the medley at 3:49.91, blowing away second-place Kadoka by more than seven seconds. The 400-meter team took third and the 3200-meter team took fifth.
Daniel Roberts and Steph Gemar were up to their old tricks, combining to sweep the discus competitions. Roberts went 180 feet, long enough to beat Tyler Schultz of Custer by three and a half feet. Gemar went 128-3, seven feet better than Taylor Boster of Killdeer, N.D. Roberts did not win the shot put, but had a career-best throw of 54-6.5. It did not put him in Shultz’s range. The national leader and state record holder won the shot put at 65-1. Gemar added an eighth-place finish in the shot, landing at 32-4.

Austin Borah broke the 11-second barrier for the first time in his career while taking second place in the 100-meter dash. Borah ran the dash in 10.8 seconds and is now tied with the second best time in Class A. Jake Riss of Class AA Rapid City Central won the race at 10.72.

Bailley Friesz and Kass Keller had impressive races in the meet’s special 400-meter dash. Friesz ran a 51.26 for third place. Both runners ahead of him were from the AA ranks. Jonah Warwick of Sioux Falls Washington won the race at 50.26. Keller took sixth in the girls’ race, crossing the line at 1:02.12. Brooke Ireland of Sturgis won the race with a super fast time of 57.92. Ireland also won the 100 and 200. Keller added a fourth-place finish in the 200 with a time 27.78. Ireland won that one in a time of 26.65.

The Lady Tiger relay teams peaked with the medley team of Maranda Wagner, Becca Martin, Kayleigh Henderson and Callie Slater taking second place. The girls ran a 4:41.66. Race winner St. Thomas More came in at 4:36.06. The girls also finished fifth in the 1600-meter and 3200-meter and sixth in the 400-meter.

“I’m proud of our athletes,” said Frederick. “They stepped up.”

After getting to face some of the best competition on the west side of the state, the Tigers and Lady Tigers will journey to Sioux Falls on Friday and Saturday to square off against the best the east has to offer.

“Now we are preparing for the Sioux Falls Relays,” said Frederick. “We still have some unfinished business.”
