Finally getting to perform on the home mat, the Tigers split two matches in triangular action at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gymnasium on Tuesday.Stanley County upended the Tigers 43-30 in their first match. The Tigers bounced back to defeat Lemmon-McIntosh 54-30 in the second dual.

“We wrestled to our potential,” said coach Spencer Novotny. “But you have to raise that bar in duals. We lost some pins and left a couple chances for pins out there. You can’t miss those little points in duals.”

Stanley County took advantage at the light weights to take an early 28-0 lead. The Tigers outscored the Buffaloes 30-15 the rest of the way, but the gap was too large to cut into enough to win the dual.

“We knew going in we’d need a big night from our young kids if we were going to beat Stanley County,” said Novotny.

The youngsters could not pull off an upset as Jake Carmody was pinned and Jaden Madison lost a major decision, which were followed by Stanley County winning four straight forfeits.

Sutton Sandquist put the Tigers in the win column by upsetting Wyatt Harrowa 4-3 at 138 pounds. Harrowa is ranked ninth in state.

“Sutton had never beaten him before,” said Novotny. “That was a big win.”

Grant Brewer and David Jensen lost back-to-back matches before Lucas Martin scored six for the Tigers by pinning Wade Wieczorek at 5:46. Teddy Lopez followed with a 28-second pin over Dawson Jones. Daniel Hintz could not keep the run going as sixth-ranked Cody LaCompte handed him a 17-5 defeat at 182 pounds. The Tigers scored 12 forfeit points of their own with Brady Spiry and Collin Jensen before Camerin Davis capped the Tiger effort by winning a 4-2 overtime match against Cade Larson at 285 pounds.

There were only five matches wrestled in the 54-30 win over Lemmon-McIntosh. The Tigers went 3-2 in those matches. The Lemmon-McIntosh wins came at the beginning and the end. Dirk Wolf pinned Jake Carmody and second-rated Brody Peterson pinned Camerin Davis.

Grant Brewer picked up the first on-mat win for the Tigers when he turned Andrea Morkenburg over for a pin 59 seconds into the first period at 145 pounds.

David Jensen won the most exciting match of the second round. Jensen trailed Adam Derschan before pulling off a reversal and putting Derschan on his back at 3:15.

Collin Jensen took on fifth-ranked Jesse Oliver for the fourth time this year, and for the fourth time the number-one-ranked 220-pounder won convincingly. Jensen put Oliver to the mat at the 56-second mark.

In the first match of the night, Stanley County defeated Lemmon-McIntosh 54-21.
