Shauni Schwartz of Herreid moved a step up the leader board to take medalist honors at the Region 5B Golf Tournament at Lee Park in Aberdeen on Monday.

Schwartz ran away from the field. After opening with a 43, she lit up the back nine with a 37 to shoot 80 and win the title by 13 strokes. Schwartz was tied with Jordyn Jones of Sully Buttes after nine holes, but Jones fell back after posting a 50 on the second nine.

Schwartz earns her region title by working her way to the top on a yearly basis. She took third in the region in 2010 and second last spring. The Herreid junior will be looking for her third straight All-State honor as she and her fellow Yellowjackets will compete in the State B Golf Tournament at The Elks Club in Rapid City on Monday and Tuesday. Schwartz was 10th in state last year after tying for 21st in 2010.

Herreid took second to Sully Buttes in the team standings. The Chargers won the title with a 295. The Yellowjackets shot 307.

Ariel Geffre and Mickey Schick will join Schwartz at state. Geffre earned her own right to state by qualifying in 10th place with a 46-62-108. Schick took 16th with a 46-58-119.

Sarah Bertsch of Eureka and Micaela Johnson and Rachel Kessel of Bowdle qualified for state. Bertsch took seventh, posting a 50-55-105. Johnson and Kessel finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Johnson shot 49-56-105 and Kessel shot 49-59-108.

Four area boys made the cut and will compete in their State B Tournament at Hart Ranch Golf Course in Rapid City.
Jordan Maier of Eureka led the area boys with a third-place finish. Maier shot 40-44-84. Trojan teammate Taylor Beutler shot 44-56-100 and finished 12th. Nathan Rohrbach of Bowdle shot 43-44-87 to take fifth place. Brady Vander Vorst of Herreid earned his trip with a 15th-place 49-53-104.
