Lady Tigers meet challenge at Region 6A meet

With their state team all but set, the Region 6A Track and Field Meet in Chamberlain on Thursday was a mere formality for the Tigers. It was a place to pick up a little more hardware and get ready for state.

It was much more than that for the Lady Tigers. It was their crunch time. It was time to deliver. And boy did they! The Lady Tigers won five regional titles and had eight second-place finishes as they took a slim roster of Kass Keller and Steph Gemar and turned it into a team 13 strong.

“They did good,” said coach Rhonda Frederick. “They did what they needed to do. They all ran their hardest and pulled through.”

Four girls won individual titles. Kass Keller ran a 27.5 to win the 200. Krista Ulmer ran a 1:05.0 to win the 400. Steph Gemar thew 117-4 to win the discus and Alexa Schaefbauer went 16-2 to win the long jump.

The Lady Tigers qualified all five relay teams with one win and four second-place finishes. The win was an unopposed run. The 3200-meter relay took an easy title as Rebecca Martin, Daysia Wiederholt, Ashton Wiederholt and Kayleigh Henderson were the only team on the track when they ran an 11:57.7. The 400, 800, 1600 and medley teams all qualified with second-place finishes.

More state qualifications came from Cassi Heumiller taking second in the 800 and 1600, Daysia Wiederholt taking second in the 3200 and Gemar taking second in the shot put.

The Tigers did rest on their laurels a little bit by not competing in some of their top events, but still pulled off five region championships.

“They did what they needed to do to get ready for state,” said Frederick.

Daniel Roberts led the way with a pair of region titles. He went 163-10 in the discus and 52-8.5 in the shot put. Bailley Friesz ran a 22.8 to win the 200. The Tigers teamed to win the 800-meter and 3200-meter relays.

The 800-meter team was once again in fine form. Austin Borah, Peyton Friesz, Cody Schaefbauer and Bailley Friesz ripped off a 1:31.2 to set a new Region 6A record. They broke the record of 1:32.1 set by Stanley County in 1984.

Cody Hanson, Lukas Schweiters, Mason Keller and Jason Hill dominated the 3200. Their time of 9:30.9 was more than 50 seconds faster than second-place Miller.

Keller added to individuals running at state by running an 11.3 and taking second in the 100-meter dash. The 400-meter relay nabbed the Tigers’ second second-place finish.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers did not stop collecting hardware with the state qualifiers. They added six third-place, four fourth-place, three fifth-place, five sixth-place, four seventh-place and four eighth-place finishes. Austin Borah took third in the 200. Lukas Schwieters took third in the 800. Jason Hill took third in the high jump and Brady Spiry took third in discus. Alexa Schaefbauer took third in the 100 and fourth in the 200. Ulmer took third in high jump. Daniel Hintz took fourth in the shot put and discus. Brandi Martian took fourth in the high jump and eighth in the 400. Conner Stoick took fifth in the 100 and sixth in the 200. Stephen Gemar took fifth in shot put. Kayleigh Henderson took fifth in the 800 and sixth in high jump. Ashton Wiederholt took sixth in the 100. Dylan Mickelson took sixth in the 400 and seventh in the 800. David Jensen took sixth in triple jump. Justin Nobles took seventh in the 1600 and 3200. Grant Brewer took seventh in triple jump. Cody Hanson took eighth in the 800 and Kenny Helm took eighth in the long jump and triple jump and tied for eighth in the 400.

The Lady Tigers had the most success in team standings. The girls scored 147 points to finish second behind Miller’s 199 points. The Tigers scored 134.5 points to take third. Miller won with 184.5. Gettysburg was second with 155.

When the State A Track and Field Meet opens in Spearfish on Friday, the Lady Tigers will be competing for hardware in 14 events with Gemar in the discus and shot put, Keller in the 200 and 400, Heumiller in the 800 and 1600, Ulmer in the 400, Schaefbauer in the long jump, and all five relay teams.

“Now their goal is to run on the second day,” said Frederick.

The boys will counter with and 11-man team that competes in 13 events. Borah will run the 100 and 200. Bailley Friesz will run the 200 and 400. Roberts will compete in the shot put and discus and Keller will run the 100. Like the Lady Tigers, the Tigers will run in all five relay races.

“The boys have high expectations this weekend,” said Frederick. “They’re going to have to give everything they have.”
Cheyenne-Eagle Butte added a pair of medley relay teams to its state roster. The girls’ team of Theola Shad, Jimmi Lawrence, Calby Pearman and Destiny Beautiful Bald Eagle won the region title. The boys’ team of Jeffrey Red Tomahawk, Brett Fischer, Harold Red Owl and Dysan Lends His Horse took second. Lends His Horse went on to win the 800 title. He will be vying for state titles in the 1600 and 3200 as well. Tracey Slidesoff took second in the 1600 and 3200. Pearman will be busy after taking second in the 100 and 200. Beautiful Bald Eagle won the 3200-meter region title.

Hank Taken Alive will represent McLaughlin in two events. Taken Alive won the 1600-meter region title and took second in the 800.

The State A Track and Field Meet kicks off at Lyle Hare Stadium in Spearfish on Friday before all three classes converge at O’Harra Stadium on Saturday for the finals.
