Cody Kraft of Timber Lake raced to second in the 300-meter hurdles and third in the 110-meter hurdles at the State B Track and Field Meet in Rapid City on Friday and Saturday.

Kraft was oh-so-close to a state title in the 300-meter race. Colman Haiar of Bridgewater-Emery won the state title, running the race in 41.42 seconds. Kraft was right on his heels, breaking the barrier at 41.46. It was a two-man race as third-place finisher Cameron Deinert of Mt. Vernon came in nearly a half-second behind Kraft. Neither Kraft nor Haiar could outrun Chris Holfeldt of Colome in the 100-meter hurdles. Holfeldt won the state title with a time of 15.59. Haiar was second at 15.94, again barely edging Kraft, who ran a 15.95.

Kristie Mettler had a strong triple jump outing, taking fourth and giving the Timber Lake girls a state placer. Mettler hit the pit at 33 feet, 7.5 inches. State champion Ali Haines of Kimball-White Lake cleared the 35-foot barrier with a winning jump of 35-1.

Herreid-Selby Area earned three second-place finishes, with the boys’ 400-meter relay and high jumpers Dakota Thorstenson and Haylee Biel all finishing as state runners-up. Nick Larson, Austin Iverson, Derek Dumdie and Cooper Schaefbauer ran a quick 44.86 for second in the 400. Viborg-Hurley was just a little quicker, winning the state title at 44.74.

Thorstenson and Wade Lockhart of Oelrichs soared past of the rest of the field in the high jump. They were the only two left after the height was raised past 6-1. Thorstenson cleared 6-3, but had to turn the title over to Lockhart when the Oelrichs jumper cleared 6-4.

Biel and state champion Kelsey Kaufmann of Arlington did the same thing in leaving the rest of the field behind. They were the only two to get past 5-1. Biel went two inches higher than she had ever done before, but going over the bar at 5-4, but Kaufmann claimed the title by clearing 5-5.

The Wolverine boys had a strong meet, scoring 29 points and tying for seventh place. Austin Iverson matched Kraft by running in both hurdle finals. He took fourth in the 110s with a time of 16.03 and sixth in the 300s with a time of 42.79. Cooper Schaefbauer picked up an individual medal by clearing 11-0 and taking eighth in the pole vault. The boys’ 800-meter relay took fifth place with a time of 1:34.52. Runners were Larson, Iverson, Cooper Schaefbauer and Logan Schaefbauer. The girls’ 400-meter team grabbed some hardware with an eighth-place finish. Abbey Fjeldheim, Tiffany Holder, Kelsey Quaschnick and Kendra Thorstenson teamed to run a 54.1.

Megan Sandmeier of Eureka-Bowdle was unsuccessful in her quest for a third straight triple jump title. Sandmeier had to settle for third in the event. Sandmeier went 34-6, but could not stay with the aforementioned Haines and second-place Lacy Stevens of Edgemont, who went 34-6.75. Sandmeier added a sixth-place finish in the long jump. She went 15-10.5. State champion Taylor Trohkimoinen of Newell and high jump winner Kaufmann each went 16-5.25, but Trohkimoinen won by having a longer second-best jump. Sierra Stotz tore to third in state in the 100-meter dash. Stotz ran 13.29 in the finals. She could not keep pace with six-time 100-meter dash champion Carly Carper of Oldham-Ramona-Rutland, who ran a 12.98. Austin Weiszhaar went 19-8.5 to claim seventh in the long jump.

The Patriot girls claimed two relay medals while the boys earned one. Megan Sandmeier, Kaitlyn Sandmeier, Leah Wipf and Stotz ripped off a 52.07 to take third place in the 400-meter relay. Kaitlyn Sandmeier, Wipf, Stotz and Courtney Weber ran a 4:35.35 to take sixth in the medley relay. The boys matched the girls with a sixth-place finish in the medley. Austin Weiszhaar, Adam Weiszhaar, Cameron Lux and Dustin Schwingler teamed to run a 3:51.85.
