Cardinals stop Redfield Pheasants 6-5 in 2B opener
While the reinvention of the Mobridge Cardinals brought more struggles than wins during the regular season, the postseason started much differently as Mobridge defeated the Redfield Pheasants 6-5 in the first round of the District 2B Tournament in Britton on Tuesday.
The Cardinals scored one in the first and another in the third and held a 2-1 lead before making it 4-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Redfield answered with two of its own to stay within one run. Mobridge put the deciding runs on the board in the eighth when Spencer Frank drilled a two-run single to give the Cardinals a 6-3 lead. Redfield tried to fight back and scored a run in the eighth and another in the ninth, but could not get the tying run across home plate and the Cardinals advance in the winner’s bracket of the double elimination tournament.
Tyler Stenberg scattered 12 hits over nine innings of work to pick up the win. Greg Heyne led the offense with three hits, including a double. Frank and Colton Good Shield added two hits each. Good Shield and Andrew Overland had run-scoring base knocks.
Eric Felderman took the loss for the Pheasants after taking over for starter Jandel Miller in the seventh. Miller and Drew Dickhaut had three hits each to pace the Redfield offense. Dickhaut had two doubles.
Mobridge will go right back to Britton tonight and play Redfield again. This time it will be regular season champion Redfield Dairy Queen. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. Tonight’s second game features the Britton Lumberjacks and the Northville Merchants.
