Selby-Eureka finishes sixth at state Teener tournament
The Selby-Eureka Teeners capped a strong season by taking sixth place at the VFW Baseball 13-14 Year Old Teener Baseball Tournament in Mt. Vernon.
Selby-Eureka lost a tight 6-5 game to Parkston in the opener and came back to beat Mt. Vernon 7-3 in the consolation semifinals before dropping an 11-1 decision to Gregory in the consolation championship game on Sunday.
Gregory pitcher Robert Komacha proved too much for Selby-Eureka in the consolation championship. Komacha held the Teeners to just five hits while striking out eight in six innings work. Brody Nieuwsma took the loss for Selby-Eureka. Elijah Bohle led the offense with a pair of base hits.
Selby-Eureka jumped on top of host Mt. Vernon with a pair of three-run innings before winning a 7-3 game on Saturday. Micah Hoellein earned the win with five innings of pitching. Brady Fiedler threw the final two innings to pick up the save. Hoellein, Fiedler and Bohle had two hits each to pace the offense.
The Walworth-McPherson boys came up just short in a wild final inning, dropping a 6-5 game to Parkston in the tourney opener on Friday. Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Selby-Eureka scored three runs and had the tying run on second and the winning run on first before succumbing with the final out of the game. Bohle started his six-hit tournament with an offense-leading two hits. John Begeman suffered the loss for Selby-Eureka.
Following the state tournament, the Selby-Eureka Teeners were named the winners of the William J. Radigan Memorial True Sportsmanship Award.
