Eric Looyenga shot a 77 to take second place at the Big Dakota Conference Golf Meet at Oahe Hills Golf Course on Tuesday.
“Eric was on cloud nine,” said coach Jason Weisbeck. “He had fun the entire day, hit shots down the middle and scored consistently. What a great experience for him.”
Looyenga was consistent all day, with 13 pars and five bogies. He shot 38 on the front nine and 39 on the back.
Coleman Caldwell of Chamberlain won the conference, and led his Cubs to the team title, with a 38-36-74. Lane Schroyer of Chamberlain was third and Jayden Bruun of Winner was fourth. Caldwell, Schroyer and Bruun all finished in the top 20 at last fall’s state meet.
David Jensen and Tyler Villbrandt earned medalist honors with top 10 finishes. Jensen opened with a 46, but recovered with a 42 to shoot 88 and take fifth place. Villbrandt picked up five strokes on the back nine, shooting 48-43 to finish ninth with a 91.
Trent Hammer and Joey Heil finished outside of medal contention. Hammer shot 93, while Heil shot 102.
“It would have been nice to shave a few strokes and take the team title,” said Weisbeck. “Everyone had shots on the course they could have done away with.”
Chamberlain took the team trophy with a 344. The Tigers were five strokes back at 349. Winner was third with a 355.
The Tigers will be in Aberdeen on Tuesday to compete in the Hub City Invitational.
