The Lady Tigers defended their home court for the second straight year with a 2-0 win over cross-county rival Herreid-Selby Area in the Mobridge-Pollock Invitational volleyball tournament at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gymnasium on Saturday.
“This being their first tournament, the girls played better than I thought they would,” said coach Keri Bolduan. “They were up for it and played well.”
The Lady Tigers used quick starts and strong, consistent serving to keep Herreid-Selby Area at bay in the title tilt. Mobridge-Pollock jumped out 4-0 in the first set and 5-0 in the second set. The Lady Tigers were in control in the key two-thirds point of each set, holding 20-13 leads both times out.
The strong service game led to the Lady Tigers holding an 11-4 edge in aces. Ellie Rabenberg and Callie Slater had four aces each. Ariel Bieber added three. Rabenberg was all over the court. She scored on offense with eight kills and defended the back row with nine digs. Kady Pinney shared team honors on offense with eight kills. Bieber added five kills and three blocks. Slater did her usual setting with a 48-48, 19-assist match. Maranda Wagner and Kayleigh Henderson led defensively. Wagner had 15 digs and Henderson had four blocks.
“Our serving was very aggressive and we passed well,” said Bolduan. “This may be the best team we’ve had at passing consistently.”
Shauni Schwartz led the Wolverines with a match-high 10 kills. Haylee Biel added five kills and 3.5 blocks. McKenzie Frank led setting with 13 assists. Kendra Thorstenson added eight digs, two assists and an ace.
The Lady Tigers were on top of the competition all day. They cruised through pool play with 2-0 sweeps over Edmunds Central and McIntosh. The Edmunds Central final was 25-10, 25-11. The Lady Tigers beat McIntosh 25-17, 25-12. Faith, who played in the State B tourney last fall, was no match for Mobridge-Pollock. Class A’s defending third-place team beat the Longhorns 25-14, 25-18.
Herreid-Selby Area earned its trip to the championship with six straight wins. They beat McLaughlin and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 2-0 each in pool play before defeating Leola-Frederick 2-0 in the semifinals.
Faith went on to beat Leola-Frederick 2-0 in the third-place match.
This was the fourth time the Lady Tigers have won their home tournament since the volleyball season was moved to the fall in 2002. The Lady Tigers won the title last year, in 2008 and in 2005.
