After getting surprised by Chamberlain in the semifinals, the Lady Tigers fought back to defeat Miller and take third place at the Big Dakota Conference Tournament in Ft. Pierre on Saturday.
The Lady Tigers opened their tourney with an easy 25-10, 25-21 win over Stanley County, but then ran into upstart Chamberlain. After the Lady Tigers had beaten the Cubs 3-0 in the season opener, Chamberlain had different thoughts at the conference tourney and out-fought the Lady Tigers 25-22, 27-25.
“For whatever reason, Chamberlain plays so well at the Big Dakota and this year was no exception,” said coach Keri Bolduan. “We did not play that well. The girls know that teams are out to get us and will play us hard. We need to work on getting focused and ready to play.”
The Lady Tigers bounced back with a 2-1 win over Miller. The Lady Tigers won set one 25-18 before Miller battled back for a 26-24 win in set two. Mobridge-Pollock pulled ahead to win 25-21 in the third and deciding match.
Kady Pinney led the Lady Tigers at the net with 12 kills. Kayleigh Henderson and Ariel Bieber had six kills each. Callie Slater sent the ball around with 22 assists. Maranda Wagner led the defense with 19 kills.
Emma Steers led Miller with eight kills and 19 digs. Jamie Mentzer had a match-high four aces and added five kills and 14 digs.
After upsetting the top-seeded Lady Tigers, Chamberlain went on to upset second seed Winner 25-23, 26-24 and win the conference title. McLaughlin defeated Todd County 25-18, 25-23 in the fifth-place match. Cheyenne-Eagle Butte stopped Stanley County 25-15, 28-26 for seventh place.
Along with the Lady Tigers’ win over Stanley County, the first round had Winner defeating Todd County 25-7, 25-8, Miller beating Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 25-17, 25-18 and Chamberlain getting McLaughlin 25-12, 25-13. Chamberlain beat the Lady Tigers and Winner won a 25-14, 28-14 match over Miller in the semifinals. McLaughlin defeated Stanley County 25-19, 26-24 and Todd County beat Cheyenne-Eagle Butte 17-25, 25-20, 25-15 in the consolation semifinals.
