The Tiger golfers did not complete their goal of sending the entire team, but did qualify three golfers for state at the Region 3A Golf Tournament in Mitchell on Monday.
“We were in the running after nine holes,” said coach Jason Weisbeck. “The boys slipped back a few strokes on the back nine to finish fifth overall as a team.”
While the team goal was not met, the goal of making it to state was met by Tyler Villbrandt, Eric Looyenga and David Jensen.
Villbrandt cracked the top 10 with a ninth-place finish. Villbrandt shot a consistent 43-45-88 in his state-qualifier.
Looyenga was a consistent golfer also. Looyenga took 12th place with a 44-45-89.
David Jensen snuck into the state field by the seat of his pants. After an opening round 44, Jensen fell to 49 on the back nine, but hung on to be the last qualifier in 21st place.
“Congrats to Tyler, Eric and David for qualifying,” said Weisbeck. “They played good golf under pressure to make the cut. They will be gaining valuable experience when it comes to next week at the state tournament in Spearfish. I look forward to seeing what they can do.”
Tanner Jerome and Joey Heil played their last competitive golf of the season. Jerome took 30th with a 51-54-105. Heil came in 34th with a 55-60-125.
“The competition is pulling away from us a bit in the region,” said Weisbeck. “Our golfers are understanding the commitment it will take to be able to compete as a team in Class A golf.”
The Tiger trio will compete in the State A Golf Tournament at Spearfish Canyon Country Club on Monday and Tuesday. Nolan Keckler of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte earned a trip to Spearfish by shooting 42-46-88 and taking 11th place.
