Lori Barnes-Gerken dies in Independence


Lori Jean Barnes-Gerken, 46, of Independence, Iowa, died Thursday morning, Aug. 9, 2012, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, following a long illness.
Lori was born on Dec. 30, 1965, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of James Leroy Barnes and LaBeth Arlone (Fisher) Barnes. She was a graduate of East Union High School in Afton, Iowa.
In 1996 she was united in marriage to Morris Gerken in Independence. They later divorced in 2003.
She worked for more than 15 years as a psych aide at the Mental Health Institute in Independence.
She is survived by her parents; a son, Cody Gerken; and a daughter, Hallei Gerken both of Independence; three sisters, Cindy (Greg) Hainline of Winthrop, Iowa, Terry Barnes-Vice of Aurora, Iowa, and Tammy (Brad) Berendts of Clyde Park, Mont.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Bess and LaBurn Fisher, and Edith and Lorn Barnes
Memorial services were held Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence.
