Ludwig passed away Sept. 16, 2012, at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck.
Ludwig Thomas III was born Dec. 16, 1916, in the Karlsruhe, N.D., area to Ludwig and Theresa (Keller) Thomas. He spent his early childhood in Aberdeen, where he attended Catholic grade school. The family moved to the Glencross area West River. When the family made their way across the Missouri River it was by ferry because there was no bridge crossing the river at the time.
He completed his education at rural school near their home at Glencross. Following his education, Lud worked for his father, who was a large rancher in the Glencross area, along with helping other farmers and ranchers in the area.
On Nov. 24, 1945, Lud married Bernardine Reinbold. Following their marriage they made their home on a farm nine miles west and one mile south of Trail City. This remained their home the rest of their lives. It was there they farmed, ranched and raised their three daughters, Joann Fritz, Evelyn Pleinis and Margaret Corner.
Lud loved his farm, raising wheat and Simmental cattle. He enjoyed fishing and was known to enjoy working with horses. As a young man, Lud was known to be quite an ice-skater and could even carve his name in the ice while skating. Lud and Bernardine enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S.A. and Canada and spent some of their winters in Arizona.
He is survived by his daughters, Joan Fritz of Glencross, Margaret Corner of Castle Rock, Colo., and Evie (Roland) Pleinis of Mobridge; grandchildren, Warren Fritz, Marci Fritz, Terri Hulm, Lonna Schmidt, Jean Hatton and Brandon Pleinis; eight great-grandchildren, Henry and Jack Fritz, Crystal Simms, Jake, Lilia and William Hatton, and Jace and Kale Schmidt; and one brother, Bernard (Dorothy) Thomas of Spearfish.
Ludwig was preceded in death by his parents, wife Bernardine, three brothers and four sisters.
Casket bearers were Warren Fritz, Marci Fritz, Terri Hulm, Lonna Schmidt, Jean Hatton and Brandon Pleinis.
Honorary bearers were Henry and Jack Fritz, Crystal Simms, Jake, Lilia and William Hatton, and Jace and Kale Schmidt.
