Lady Tigers sweep Lady Midgets 3-0

By Jay Davis

The Lady Tigers raised their record to 16-4 with a 3-0 win over McLaughlin at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gymnasium on Monday.
Mobridge-Pollock dominated sets one and three, winning 25-13 in the opener and 25-4 in the in final set, but struggled to a 26-24 win in the middle set with senior setter Callie Slater on the bench resting an injured right hand.
“We didn’t play as well without Callie,” said coach Keri Bolduan. “When she is in the others have to step up.”
Bolduan added that it was a trust and confidence issue as Slater’s replacement, Becca Martin, stepped in to set 20 for 20 with eight assists.
“The girls did a lot of things they don’t normally do,” said Bolduan.
After a slow start in set one the score was tied at 7-7. Kady Pinney stepped in and everything changed. Pinney served 13 straight points in a run that featured her six aces along with two kills each by Ellie Rabenberg and Kayleigh Henderson. McLaughlin rallied for a few points before the Lady Tigers finished the set off with a Rabenberg kill.
The Lady Tigers could not find a measure of consistency in set two. Mobridge-Pollock fell behind 16-11 before rallying to square things up at 18-18. With the score knotted at 22-22, Martin hit two straight aces, but the Tigers could not put the set away until the Lady Midgets gave up two unearned points after tying the set at 24-24.
The Lady Tigers got their groove back in set three. They jumped out quick with a 7-1 lead. With the lead at 10-3, Aundrea Kramer served a 12-0 run. Kramer had three aces during the run. Henderson added three kills and Pinney had two. With the lead at 24-4, Pinney ended the night with her sixth ace of the match.
Pinney’s six aces led a 18-ace attack. She was followed by Rabenberg with four and Kramer with three. Slater and Martin combined for 24 assists on 54 of 54 hitting. They spread the ball around with Henderson getting a match-leading eight kills, Rabenberg seven, Pinney five and Ariel Bieber four. When the defense was needed, Maranda Wagner had 10 of the team’s 33 digs.
Shayla Gayton led the Lady Midgets with four kills and two aces. Billi Rae Jamerson led the team with four aces. McKenna Vetter added four kills.

The Lady Tigers will get a week off to prepare for the 13-4 Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers. Roncalli is tied for fifth in this week’s Class A poll. The Lady Tigers are ranked eighth, coming in 10th, coming in fourth on the also receiving votes list.
The Lady Tigers have won four of the last five meetings against Roncalli, including a 3-2 win in the third-place match at last fall’s State A Volleyball Tournament. The Lady Tigers beat the Cavaliers 3-1 in Aberdeen during the regular season. Roncalli beat the Lady Tigers in 2010 with the Bridge City girls winning in 2008 and ’09.
“We’re going to spend the week changing up our defense and working on eliminating mental mistakes,” said Bolduan. “We’re going to have to be ready to go on Tuesday.”
