Committee hasn’t decided about ice fishing tournament

Mother Nature is not cooperating with the Mobridge Area Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee as members watch the formation of ice on Lake Oahe with the annual ice fishing tournament right around the corner.

The 450-team tournament is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 13 and Saturday, Jan 14 in Mobridge. The actual ice fishing is scheduled for Saturday.

“We will be meeting again on Thursday, (Jan. 5) to discuss what we will do,” said committee member Jesse Konold. “Our biggest consideration is the safety of our anglers.”

The tournament officials have been discussing alternatives because of lack of solid, thick ice, but as of Tuesday, Jan. 3, no decisions have been made.

“What we are hearing from our anglers is that they will support any decisions that we make,” said Konold. “It sounds like they will be coming to Mobridge no matter what decision we make on the fishing.”

Alternatives include moving the borders north where the ice is thicker than around the Mobridge area or canceling the fishing but holding a drawing party where the prizes will be given.

Further information about the committee decision will be printed in next week’s Tribune and will be posted online at as soon as it becomes available.
