Wolverines power past Patriots in 9A opener

Herreid-Selby Area used a three-touchdown barrage in the second quarter to set up a 36-12 win over Eureka-Bowdle in the opening round of the Class 9A playoffs in Selby on Tuesday.
Herreid-Selby Area took an 8-0 lead in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Dakota Houck.
The scoring run started when Nick Larson hit Cooper Schaefbauer down the middle for a 32-yard touchdown pass with 6:32 left in the half. Four minutes later, Houck found an opening on the left side and scampered 32 yards to the end zone. With just two seconds left in the half, Larson spotted Dakota Thorstenson for a four-yard touchdown pass. The third touchdown gave the Wolverines a 28-0 halftime lead.
Eureka-Bowdle tried to rally in the third quarter. The Patriots got on the board when Josh Raile hit Cameron Lux for a six-yard touchdown midway through the quarter. Raile did the work himself for the second touchdown, scoring on a 36-yard run on the last play of the third quarter.
The Wolverines took care of business in the fourth quarter. Houck iced the win with his third touchdown, scoring on a three-yard run with just over eight minutes left in the quarter.
Schaefbauer had a huge game for the Wolverines, running for 103 yards and five passes for 115 yards. He also led the defense with nine tackles. Houck added 57 yards rushing. Larson threw for 214 yards on nine completions and added 40 yards on the ground.
Raile finished with just 53 yards passing on seven completions. Austin Weiszhaar caught three balls for 48 yards. Brandon Beutler led the ground game with 102 yards.
Herreid-Selby Area will keep its home field advantage for the second round of the playoffs. The Wolverines will host 6-3 Corsica-Stickney on Monday. Corsica-Stickney defeated South Central 56-0 in the opening round.
