The Lady Panthers of Timber Lake are packing their bags for their first-ever trip to state after beating Harding County 3-1 in the Region 8B championship game in Lemmon on Tuesday.
“It was an incredible night,” said coach Sarah Schweitzer. “The Panthers really came out to play. They played with real confidence.”
Timber Lake jumped out early with a 25-17 win only to have Harding County square the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 win.
“We had game two where we were down by 10 points at one time and came back to lose by only five,” said Schweitzer.
With the confidence built from the rally, the Lady Panthers fought for the region title by winning the next two sets 25-20 and 25-17.
Courtney Dahlgren stepped to the forefront for Timber Lake with a huge night. Dahlgren was 15 of 22 hitting with nine kills and 19 of 20 serving with seven aces. Kristie Mettler put up numbers across the board with six kills on 12 of 18 hitting, five aces on 17 of 17 serving, 2.5 blocks and 10 digs. Kathryn Biegler led the back row defense with 19 digs. Kailee Webb and Skya Ducheneaux split the setting duties, combining for 19 assists on 110 of 110 setting.
“We really wanted to hit Harding County’s weak spots to use that to our advantage and we did,” said Schweitzer. “We had an awesome night of serving and the girls played really smart.”
Sierra Stugelmeyer led the Ranchers with 11 kills, two aces and two blocks. Alex Giannonatti added nine kills, while leading the defense with 16 digs. Karlie Gress dished out a match-leading 24 assists.
With one mountain climbed, an even higher one awaits the Lady Panthers in the opening round of the State B Volleyball Tournament in Mitchell on Nov. 15 through 17. As the seven seed, Timber Lake will match up against two seed and defending state champion Warner in the 7:45 p.m. game.
“I feel that we are peaking at the right time,” said Schweitzer.
