Herreid-Selby Area wins second straight region

By Jay Davis

Herreid-Selby Area retained its championship title with a 3-0 win over Highmore-Harrold in the Region 3B championship game in Selby on Tuesday.
The Wolverines left no doubt who was in charge by dealing the Pirates a 25-11, 25-20, 25-21 defeat.
“It was a great win tonight!” said coach Jody Schmidt. “We jumped out in the first game and really took it to them, but they came back fighting in game two and game three. They played hard and gave us all we could handle.”
The Wolverines, in turn, gave the Pirates more than they could handle. Middle hitters Haylee Biel and Shauni Schwartz were an undeniable force for Herreid-Selby Area with a combined 34 kills. Biel led the way with 22 kills on 34 of 41 hitting. Schwartz was 31 of 32 with 12 kills. The duo also combined for 5.5 blocks.
“Our middle hitters were unstoppable tonight,” said Schmidt, “and the passes were there so our setters could get them the ball.”
McKenzie Frank and Kendra Thorstenson double-teamed the flying ball with their defense and passing. Frank led all setters with 20 assists on 73 of 73 setting and defended with 19 digs. Thorstenson led all defenders with 24 digs and added eight assists on 21 of 21 setting.
Tyann Hamlin led Highmore-Harrold with 11 kills, 17 digs and two aces. McKenzie Zilverberg had 12 assists and 12 digs. Courtney Keller led all servers with five aces. The champions of District 5B end the season with 19 wins and 10 losses.
The 28-2 Wolverines enter their second State B Volleyball Tournament as the number three seed. They will take on six seed James Valley Christian in the 6 p.m. game in the opening round at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. The state tournament starts on Nov. 15.
“This team is special,” said Schmidt. “They truly put the team first and care about team goals before personal accomplishments. I am so happy for them and what they have accomplished this year.”
