The ref slaps the mat after David Jensen pins Seth Schaefer of Oakes, N.D., at the Faulkton Invitational on Saturday. Jensen went on to beat teammate Teddy Lopez for the 182-pound championship.

The sight on the mat was curious when the 182-pound and 195-pound championship matches came up at the Faulkton Invitational on Saturday. The curious sight was a Mobridge-Pollock Tiger wrestling a Mobridge-Pollock Tiger in each match.
David Jensen beat teammate Teddy Lopez for the 182-pound title, while Chase Schoenhard won his second straight title with a come-from-behind win over Brady Spiry.
“We knew they all had a chance to get there,” said coach Spencer Novotny. “They all won some hard-fought battles to get there.”
Jensen battled past Jed Bopp of Oakes 4-2 to get to the title match, while Lopez grappled past Zach Sumner of Aberdeen Roncalli 8-2. Jensen was the dominant Tiger in the championship, putting Lopez away 9-2.
“David is looking good,” said Novotny.  “He knows his technique.”
Schoenhard needed two overtimes to beat Brian Peterson of Warner-Northwestern 7-6 in the semifinals. Spiry looked strong in pinning two tough competitors to get to the championship.
Most of the title tilt was going Spiry’s way until the final seconds when Schoenhard shot, got a headlock and a five-point fall to pull off the upset win in an 8-5 match.
“Chase is wrestling well. He’s our only undefeated wrestler,” said Novotny. “Brady wrestled well, too. He fought back for a big pin against the Oakes wrestler.”
Bray Harrison and Brett Lang wrestled to third-place finishes.
Harrison wrapped three pins around his loss while taking third at 113 pounds. Jon Brummund of Oakes beat Harrison 10-0 in the second round. Not defeated by defeat, Harrison came back to pin Cody Peterson of Ipswich-Leola and Nick Strasburg of Sioux Valley.
“Bray had a heck of day,” said Novotny. “He’ll get to see the Oakes kid again this weekend.”
The Tigers were not alone in sending two wrestlers to the finals as the 113-pound finals were all Oakes. Brady Ptacek beat Brummond 8-3 for the title.
On a day of curious things, Lang had one of his own as all three of his matches were against wrestlers from Lemmon-McIntosh. Lang lost a 7-2 match to Garrett Clark in the first round before pinning Marshall Johnson in 53 seconds and Brandon Heil in 39 seconds.
“Brett should have beat the first Lemmon kid,” said Novotny. “But he wrestled well and had a good day.”
Bryan Merkel at 132 pounds and Jordan Feist at 138 pounds each won twice, while Connor Stoick, Austin Borah and Jayson Van Vugt each went 1-2.
“Conn0r was wrestling well, but got injured and had to default,” said Novotny. “He’ll take the weekend off, but should be back next week.”
Jaden Madison and Killain Warner had rough days, both going 0-2.

Linton
The Tigers will cross the north border to compete in the Linton Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The tournament features some of the best wrestling teams in North Dakota. Oakes, who won at Faulkton by more than 100 points, took second last year, while the Tigers finished 11th.
“It’s going to be a tough one,” said Novotney.
