The Tiger wrestlers split a pair of matches at the Potter County triangular in Hoven on Thursday. Mobridge-Pollock beat Leola-Ipswich 22-9 in an abbreviated match and then dropped a 52-24 match to host Potter County.
Coach Spencer Novotny chose to leave a few wrestlers on the sideline instead of having them earn forfeit wins, leaving just six matches that produced team points. There were only four matches wrestled and the Tigers won two.
Bray Harrison defeated Cody Peterson 8-0 and Killian Warner won his first match of the year by pinning Tanner Moore in 41 seconds. In the losses, Bryan Merkel was pinned by Lane Peterson and Jordan Feist lost a 7-2 match to Alex Marsh.
“We came out and wrestled very aggressive,” said Novotny. “Even though they both lost, Jordan and Bryan wrestled the best they have all year.”
The same could not be said in the Potter County match. The Tigers fell behind 52-0 before rallying with 24 late points.
“We simply did not wrestle well as a team against Potter County,” said Novotny. “We have a lot of (young and old) guys that have never competed in the wrestling format like it was. Potter County scored bonus points in nearly every match they wrestled. If you give up bonus points, you’re not going to beat a team like PC.”
The Battlers built their 52-point lead in weight classes 106 through 170. The 10 wins came with four pins, three decisions and three forfeits.
Jayson Van Vugt battled to the end with Austin Haberer of Potter County but lost a 5-4 match at 170. Harrison lost a 6-0 match to Lucas Smith at 113. Travis Siebrasse defeated Connor Stoick 11-1. Merkel, Feist, Warner and Austin Borah all lost by pin.
The Tigers only had two wins that were fought on the mat, but both were pins. David Jensen pinned Lucas Vogel at 2:29 at 182. Chase Schoenhard beat the final buzzer by one second, pinning Denver Jost at 5:59 at 220. Teddy Lopez at 182 and Brett Lang at 285, won by forfeit.
The Tigers will hit the mats during the holiday break. They wrestle in the Webster Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 29.
Novotny said he hopes his Tigers can take advantage of the week to improve their skills.
“We still have some stuff we need to work on,” said Novotny. “We need to work harder in the practice room so we can go out and perfect the moves we drill every day.”
