Spiry captures Mid-Dakota Monster title
By Jay Davis
Brady Spiry won the 220-pound weight class at the Mid-Dakota Monster wrestling tournament in Presho on Saturday.
“It was great,” said coach Spencer Novotny. “It was good to see him win.”
In his first tournament since moving up from 195 pounds, Spiry outlasted four straight wrestlers to win the title. He opened with a pair of wins over Redfield-Doland wrestlers, pinning Kyle Blume at 1:39 and beating Brett Christman 7-2. Spity won a 7-3 decision over Brendan Rotert of Spearfish/Lead-Deadwood and then beat Thomas Schipporiet of O’Neill, Neb., 5-1 in the title bout.
“He wrestled well,” said Novotny. “He still has to get a little adjusted to the weight difference.”
Spiry is ranked fifth in Class B in the latest wrestling polls.
Spiry received added hardware when he was named the winner of the Justin Cook Memorial “Never Give Up” award following the tournament. Spiry was voted the winner of the award by the coaches. Justin Cook, who was killed in an automobile accident, was a wrestler who gave his all until the final buzzer sounded.
David Jensen, Chase Schoenhard and Brett Lang had sixth-place finishes.
“It’s tough to finish a tournament with losses, but it was a really tough tourney, “said Novotny. “We lost to some really good kids.”
Jensen finished sixth at 182 pounds. Jensen, who is ranked 10th in his weight class, lost to three wrestlers ranked ahead of him. After beating Mario Lupercio of Hill City 13-8, Jensen was beaten 16-5 by Chance Knutson of Philip Area. He bounced back with pins over Jon Hansen of St. Thomas More and Luke McFarland of Spearfish/Lead-Deadwood, but was pinned by Evan Larsen of Kingsburg County and beaten 4-2 by Clay Siedler of Custer. Knutson is ranked fifth, Larsen eighth and Siedler ninth.

Schoenhard pinned Zach Storjohann of O’Neill but lost a 4-3 match to Scott Assman (ranked third) of Winner. Wins over Marcus Heatch of Bennett County and Tyler Massat (ranked 11th) of Redfield-Doland got him back to medal contention, but he was beaten 11-9 by Witt Dobesh (ranked second) of St. Thomas More and 8-5 by Cameron Goodrich of Rapid City Central.
Lang was pinned by Class B sixth-ranked Cody Friese of Redfield-Doland in the opening round at 285, before battling back with pins over Max Broken Nose of Pine Ridge and Eric Steiner of Redfield-Doland. Things turned the other way in the medal rounds as Lang was pinned by Class A 11th-ranked Jess Trueblood of Pine Ridge and Class B 10th-ranked Cade Larson of Stanley County.

After receiving a forfeit win, Borah was beaten by Ryan Yost of Redfield-Doland and Cole Schelske of Lyman.

He opened with a pin over Trig Olson of Harding County, but was pinned by Gene Trimble of Spearfish/Lead-Deadwood in the second round. Madison pinned Tristan Ferguson of Little Wound and Deon Beardemphal of Redfield-Doland, but came up short and was pinned by Jon Marvin of O’Neill.
