Youngsters provide Tigers help in home quadrangular performance
By Jay Davis
The Tigers won one of three matches on Thursday in their second home quadrangular meet. The Tigers beat Sully Buttes 48-25, but not before falling 43-33 to Faulkton Area and 52-26 to Linton-HMB.
Coach Spencer Novotny was most pleased with the 10-point loss to Faulkton Area. Last week in Highmore the Trojans beat the Tigers 60-18.
“We wrestled Faulkton a lot better,” said Novotny. “Our JV kids helped us in the duals.”
The JV kids are a quartet of seventh graders who stepped up to wrestle varsity for the two home meets held last week. It was, in fact, one of those seventh-graders who provided the evening’s most exciting moment.
Stone Jensen was trailing Adam Anderson of Faulkton Area 12-3 in the final minute of the match. When Anderson made a mistake, Jensen took advantage and put the Trojan wrestler on his back. Jensen kept Anderson on his back until finally getting the pin with just eight seconds left.
“I tell all the guys that you never give up,” said Novotny. “That’s a perfect example of that.”
Also winning against the Trojans were Bray Harrison, Teddy Lopez, Chase Schoenhard and Brady Spiry.
Harrison beat Joe Holsing 7-1. Lopez stuck Matt Holsing at 1:01. Schoenhard and Spiry received forfeits.
Jaden Madison, Jensen, Jordan Feist, Austin Borah, David Jensen, Schoenhard, Spiry and Brett Lang all won in the win over Sully Buttes.
Madison beat Austin Wiley 9-2. Jensen pinned Chase Ninceheiser at 1:19. Feist won a 9-4 match over Phillip Gilliland. The last four wins were a parade of forfeits.
The Tigers fell behind 52-0 to Linton-HMB before rallying with the last 26 points. Jayson Van Vugt started the rally with a 3-1 win over Michael Oien. David Jensen trounced Garret Roemmich 18-1. Schoenhard pinned Ethan Roemmich at 5:54 and Spiry pinned Cody Schlosser at 2:27 before Lang picked up a forfeit win.
