Spiry takes first as 10 Tigers place in Winner
By Jay Davis
Brady Spiry won the 220-pound championship as 10 Tigers placed and the team finished fourth at the Winner Invitational Tourney on Saturday.
“We had a good day,” said coach Spencer Nototny.
Spiry raised his record to 13-2 with his 220-pound title. It took just a pair of wins as Spiry pinned Kyle Blume of Redfield-Doland and then beat Logan Ammons of Philip 8-0. Novotny said Spiry has raised his level of aggressiveness on offense.
“He’s starting to realize he can shoot for, and go after takedowns,” said Novotny.
Jaden Madison had his best finish, taking second at 120 pounds. Madison had to battle to get through his bracket. He won an 11-8 match over Stas Sutera in the first round and then avenged a loss from a week ago by beating Deion Beardemphal of Redfield-Doland 6-5 in overtime. The championship match was short as he was pinned by Nick Donnelly of Philip Area at 1:15.
“He lost, but it was his first finals so that was good for Jaden,” said Novotny.
David Jensen was 2-1 to take second at 182. He pinned Logan Rothschadl of Bon Homme and beat Tyler Masat of Redfield-Doland 3-1. The finals did not last long as Chance Knutson of Philip Area pinned him in 49 seconds.
“David got caught in a headlock right away,” said Notovny. “It’s unfortunate. David wrestled him really well in Lemmon.”
Brett Lang picked up the team’s third second-place finish at 285 pounds. Lang pinned Jason Johnson of Bon Homme and Tre’zen Doren of Andes Central to get to the championship. In the finals he met one of the state’s best in Cody Friese of Redfield-Doland and fought him to a 9-1 match.
“Brett wrestled Friese well,” said Novotny. “He got pinned the last time they wrestled.”
Jayson Van Vugt, Teddy Lopez and Chase Schoenhard had third-place finishes.
Van Vugt went 4-1 in a busy bracket at 171 pounds. He beat D.J. Beckwith of Sunshine Bible Academy 10-2 and Cordel Vissia of Mt. Vernon-Plankinton-Corsica 6-0 before getting pinned by Clint Everett Stout of Philip Area. Van Vugt recovered to beat Beckwith 8-0 and then win a 7-1 match of Thomas Mitzel of Bon Homme for third.
Lopez took third at 182, wrestling unattached. His only loss was to the same kid who pinned Jensen, Chance Knutson of Philip Area. Wrapped around that, Lopez pinned Jon Hansen of St. Thomas More, Logan Boerner of Winner and Tyler Masat of Redfield-Doland.
Schoenhard took third at 195. He opened with a pin at 5:20 over Brett Christman of Redfield-Doland, but was defeated by tourney champ Witt Dobesh of St. Thomas More 6-2. Schoenhard came back to beat Cameron Kostal of Mt. Vernon-Plankinton-Corsica 8-6 and then edged Christman 8-6 in overtime in the third-place match.
Jordan Feist finished fourth, while Bray Harrison and Grant Brewer had sixth-place finishes.
Feist put up a good fight, but was beaten 9-4 by Raedon Anderson of Philip Area in the third-place match at 138 pounds.
Harrison got his most important win with a 49-second pin over Teigan Gray of Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Dupree at 113 pounds.
Brewer used a pin at 2:50 over Hunter Avery of Redfield-Doland to carry him to sixth at 152 pounds.
The Tigers will wrestle in two different venues on Saturday. Harrison, Madison, David Jensen, Lang, Lopez, Van Vugt, Schoenhard and Spiry will compete at the Lee Wolf Invitational in Aberdeen. Feist, Brewer, Killian Warner, Austin Borah, Nathan Bauer, Keegan Pearman, Jaden Shepherd and Stone Jensen will compete at the Groton Invitational.
