Three Tigers placed at the Lee Wolf Invitational in Aberdeen on Saturday.
Brett Lang led the Tiger contingent with a fifth-place finish at 285 pounds.
“Brett wrestled very well,” said coach Spencer Novotny. “He’s getting a lot more aggressive on his feet.”
Lang had to fight through the loser’s bracket after getting pinned by eventual second-place winner Cody Friese of Redfield-Doland. He got back to the medal rounds by beating Brandon Metz of West Fargo 6-1 and Sam Weisensee of Sioux Falls O’Gorman 2-1. Lang lost a tough 3-0 match to Jacob Siglin of Webster Area (who took third), but came back to claim fifth-place with a 3:38 pin over Zach Ristau of Chamberlain.
“We’re still a little disappointed about where we placed,” said Novotny, “but we’re wrestling Siglin better every time.”
Dropping a pair of matches to a North Dakota wrestler led to Brady Spiry settling for sixth place at 220 pounds. Spiry opened with a pin over Austin Cheney of Chamberlain, but was pinned by Zach Eider of West Fargo the second round. He worked back to the medal rounds by pinning Kyle Blume of Redfield-Doland and Jeremiah Johnson of Huron. Spiry lost a tough 2-1 match to Jack Shuver of Sioux Falls O’Gorman trying to get to the third-place match before Eider beat him 8-0 in the fifth-place match.
“Brady wrestled better, but lost those two matches to the Fargo kid,” said Novotny. “We just couldn’t get it going against O’Gorman.”
Chase Schoenhard finished seventh at 195 pounds. It was not his best performance of the season as Schoenhard went 1-2 for the day. Schoenhard was pinned by Riley Ostbye of Canton and lost a 12-10 match to Matt Schlosser of Aberdeen Roncalli before coming back to beat Brett Christman of Redfield-Doland 9-5 in the seventh-place match.
“Chase has got to get better on his feet,” said Novotny. “Everybody knows he’s a mat wrestler. We’re working on it.”
David Jensen at 182 pounds, Jaden Madison at 120 pounds and Bray Harrison at 113 pounds failed to make the medal rounds.
Jensen went 1-2. He opened with an 18-1 technical fall over Logan Boerner of Winner, but was beaten 10-1 by Mark Meland of Webster Area and pinned by Triston Wirtjes of Watertown.
“David had a tough day,” said Novotny. “He was in a tough weight class.”
Harrison went 1-2. He picked up a pin over Jacob Lacota of Chamberlain in the first round, but was pinned by Reed Cronin of West Fargo and edged 5-3 by Jacob Franek of West Fargo.
“Bray got pinned, but he wrestled well against the number one seed,” said Novotny.
Madison got behind and never caught up in losing two straight matches.
“He spotted too many points,” said Novotny. “You can dig yourself a hole.”
