The Tigers wrapped up their regular season with three wrestlers placing at the Big Dakota Conference Tournament in Ft. Pierre on Saturday.
The Tigers were led by Brady Spiry taking second place at 220 pounds. David Jensen and Chase Schoenhard took third place at 182 and 195 pounds, respectively.
“We wrestled pretty well,” said coach Spencer Novotny. “We’re showing improvement every week. Most of the guys that beat us placed.”
Novotny noted that having a 17-team tournament with full brackets and only four wrestlers placing was a great warm-up and training lesson for what the Tigers will have to face at the upcoming Region 4B Tournament.
“That’s just how it will be at regionals,” said Novotny.
Spiry got to the finals by pinning Trevor Gress of Harding County in 44 seconds and beating Rob Stover of Pine Ridge 3-1. In the finals, Spiry ran into the number one 220-pound wrestler in state, Brady Reiff of Parkston. Reiff got out quickly with 6-2 lead and went on to beat Spiry 13-4.
“Brady wrestled tough, but I think he got his eyes opened a little bit,” said Novotny. “After he got behind, he wrestled pretty even with the number one kid in the state.”
Jensen started with a 28-second pin over Shawn Richards of Little Wound and a 3:28 pin over Jimmy Sharkey of Winner, but had a rough time in a 13-0 loss to Reece Jensen of Harding County. Jensen fought back to take third by winning a 17-2 technical fall over Nick Weber of Parkston and winning an 11-3 major decision over Jeremy Long of Todd County.
“David got thrown right away and got in trouble against Harding County,” said Novotny. “He wrestled really well after that, but the loss will hurt his seeding at the regional.”
Schoenhard got off to a slow start, but edged Nick Claussen of Chamberlain 8-7 in the first round. A 10-4 loss to Scott Assman of Winner was a setback, but Schoenhard came back hard with a 2:30 pin over Anthony Buchmann of Parkston and a 3:44 pin over Tyson O’Daniel of Stanley County.
“He had a slow start, but Chase likes those kinds of matches,” said Novotny. “The win against the Stanley County kid was big for the region.”
The Tigers got 2-2 tournaments out of Bray Harrison at 113, Jade Madison at 120 and Brett Lang at 285. Grant Brewer at 152 and Austin Borah at 160 went 1-2 each, while Jordan Feist at 138 and Killian Warner at 145 suffered 0-2 days.
The Tigers have been invited to wrestle in Philip this weekend, but Novotny thinks his Tigers will be best served to practice and get healthy before the Region 4B Wrestling Tournament in Rapid City on Feb. 16.
Novotny said 170-pounder Jayson Van Vugt is getting closer to healthy with his foot injury and should be ready for the regional.
