It was quality versus quantity as Mobridge-Pollock dominated event titles, but Aberdeen Roncalli won both divisions at the Early Bird Meet at Tiger Stadium on Thursday.
Mobridge-Pollock won 10 events (Tigers eight, Lady Tigers two), but finished second in the boys’ division and fourth in the girls’ division. The Aberdeen Roncalli boys outscored the Tigers 153 to 97, but won just four events. The Lady Cavaliers won five events and won a close girls’ division with 97 points. Potter County scored 96, Timber Lake 85, the Lady Tigers 77 and Herreid-Selby Area 75.
Coach Marty Looyenga was impressed with his thinclads and their performance despite cold, breezy conditions.
“I was happy with how they did,” said Looyenga. “We had kids step up. It was cold and they ran through it.”
The boys’ division was all Tigers on top. Mobridge-Pollock won eight events, while setting one new Early Bird record and tying another.
The 1600-meter relay team, while not near the school record set last year by the state champion team, was far better than the competition in setting a new meet record. Austin Borah and Cody Schaefbauer, returning from the team that won state last year, were joined by newcomers Mitch Heumiller and Mason Keller. The foursome dominated the race in an Early Bird record time of three minutes, 38.97 seconds. They knocked nearly five seconds off the 3:42.82 that Tigers Kevin Wientjes, Rocky Maier, Jordan Slater and Bailley Friesz ran in 2010. Runner-up Aberdeen Roncalli was almost 17 seconds behind Mobridge with a 3:55.46.
Borah put his name in the record book for a second time in the 100-meter dash. His time of 11.22 seconds tied the time his big brother Kristian ran at the 2011 Early Bird. Borah’s fast time (just short of 11.2 needed to qualify for state) was a tenth of a second faster than Nick Larson of Herreid-Selby Area and Jarrod Tuszka of Warner.
Daniel Roberts opened his senior season by collecting the daily double-double with wins in the discus and shot put. Roberts did not mess around getting qualified for state in the discus with a winning throw of 171 feet, 10 inches, which is more than 20 feet past the qualifying standard (151-1). He picked up his second win by going 48-0 in the shot put. Jon Schwab of Aberdeen Roncalli was second in the discus at 142-4. Cavalier Dalton Cox was the shot put runner-up at 43-10.25.
Schaefbauer gave the Tigers a fifth open win by flying past the competition in the 400. Schaefbauer won the race by three seconds. He finished at 53.48 seconds, while runner-up Kevin Scherr of Edmunds Central came in at 56.96.
The Tigers dominated the relays with three wins in five races. Along with the 1600-meter, the Tigers won the 400, 800 and medley relays. Borah and Schaefbauer had perfect days, combining their open and 1600-meter relay wins by running legs on the winning 800-meter and medley teams. Heumiller and Conner Stoick joined them to win the 800 at 1:36.78. Herreid-Selby Area was second at 1:37.15. Keller and Cody Hanson joined the pair in winning the medley at 4:04.59. Roncalli was runner-up at 4:14.31.
The Tigers added two second, a third, a fourth, a sixth and two eighth-place finishes. Mitch Heumiller in the 200 and the 3200-meter relay team took second, the 400-meter relay team took third, Reece Wientjes was fourth in the triple jump, Daniel Hintz was sixth in shot put, Mason Keller eighth in the 100 and Trent Hammer eighth in the 800.
Placing second through eighth was the difference in Roncalli outscoring the Tigers. After the Cavaliers’ four wins, they had seven seconds, three thirds, six fourths, three fifths, two sixths, two sevenths and an eighth.
Matt Swallow had the biggest win for Roncalli. Swallow won the 300-meter hurdles in a record time of 42.59 seconds. He broke the 43.66 run by Derek Roemmich of Linton-HMB in 2011.
The Cavaliers swept the pits with Chad Hay winning the long jump at 17-5 and Mitch Musel winning the triple jump at 38-4. The Cavaliers fourth win came in the 3200-meter relay.
Herreid-Selby Area won the 400-meter relay, but their biggest win was Austin Iverson crushing the 110-meter hurdles record. Iverson blazed to a time of 15.49 seconds, which took out the 16.67 Cody Kraft ran last year. In a fast heat, two Roncalli runners ran faster than the old record. Swallow took second at 16.02 and Zach Schaefbauer took third at 16.12.
Jarrod Tuszka of Warner, who finished second to Borah in the 100, erased Borah’s record from the books in the 200. Tuszka ran the half lap in 23.24 seconds. He broke the time of 23.43 seconds Borah ran last year.
Daniel Burkhalter of Bison was the second two-time winner in the boys’ division. The seventh grader won the 1600 and 3200. He won the 1600 at 4:59.56 and the 3200 at 11:09.0. He beat Brendan Harrison of Standing Rock in both races.
Timber Lake got a win from Nicholas Bad Warrior in the 800. Bad Warrior hit the finish line at 2:19.02 to beat Jayson Running Hawk of McLaughlin, who ran a 2:20.02.
Caden Smiley of Faith picked up the Longhorns’ lone win in the high jump. Smiley took first by clearing 5-10. Teammates Reggie Rhoden and Gereth Buschong took second and third, respectively.

Girls Division
Steph Gemar and the 3200-meter relay team led the Lady Tigers’ effort in the season opener.
Gemar won the discus and qualified for state in the process. She launched her best throw 125-9, which was past the state qualifying mark of 113-2, and even farther past runner-up Miranda Ristau of Warner who went 111-9.
The 3200-meter team of Cassi Heumiller, Ellie Rabenberg, ReAnne Kohlus and Callie Slater outlasted Lemmon in their win. The Lady Tigers ran an 11:14.72. The Cowgirls ran an 11:15.72.
The Lady Tigers peppered the placings with three seconds, a third, three fourths, a fifth, two sixths and a seventh.
Heumiller raced to second in the 1600 with a time of 6:10.15. Brandi Martian cleared 4-6 for second in the high jump. Slater, Alexa Schaefbauer, Kara Schneider and Maranda Wagner took second in the medley at 4:59.93.
Heumiller, Rabenberg, Martian and Slater teamed for a third place 1600-meter relay with a time of 4:43.72.
Wagner ran a 29.14 for fourth in the 200. Kohlus ran a 14:12.68 for fourth in the 3200 and Schaefbauer went 12-11 for fourth in the long jump.
Team of Keshia Milliken, Tara Whalen, Madyson Aberle and Kayla Schneider ran a 1:01.69 for fifth in the 400-meter relay.
Madison Rau ran a 1:10.68 for sixth in the 400. The team of Rau, Wagner, Kayla Schneider and Kara Schneider ran a 2:10.72 for sixth in the 800-meter relay.
Gemar picked up her second throwing medal of the day by hitting the 31-10 mark and taking seventh in the shot put.
Kristie Mettler of Timber Lake was the top female athlete of the Early Bird. Mettler was the day’s only triple winner, taking first in the 100, long jump and triple jump. Mettler won the 100 with a time of 13.34 seconds. Her winning jumping distances were 14-5 in the long jump and 32-9 in the triple jump. Mettler added a second-place finish in the 200.
Lady Panther teammate Evy Johnson won the 1600 with a time of 6:08.52.
Hailey Kline led Aberdeen Roncalli with two hurdling wins, including one record-breaking performance. Kline set the new standard in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.3 seconds. She broke the 16.58 set by Courtney Schlenker of Mobridge in 2003. Kline used a time of 51.9 in the 300-hurdles for her second win of the day. Also winning for the Lady Cavaliers were Paige Sommers in the 200, Erica Carrels in the 400 and Kendra Woytassek in the 3200.
Haylee Biel and the Wolverine relay teams combined to give Herreid-Selby Area two wins. Biel won the high jump by clearing 4-8 and the shot put by landing the steel ball at a state-qualifying 36-7. The Lady Wolverines added wins in the 800 and medley relays.
Potter County was the last of five teams to win girls’ division events. Jenna Schweiss won the 800 and the Lady Battler 400 and 1600 relay teams crossed the finish line first.
