The Tigers made a lot of noise at the Black Hills Track Classic in Sturgis on Saturday. The Tigers set two relay records on the track and Daniel Roberts swept his events in the field.
The team of Cody Schaefbauer, Austin Borah, Mitch Heumiller and Mason Keller put their names in the Classic record books with a pair of stellar performances. The boys set new records in the 800- and 1600-meter relays.
“That was pretty cool,” said coach Marty Looyenga.
The foursome did not let the competition come close in either race. The Tigers ran the 800-meter relay in one minute, 31.24 seconds and the 1600-meter relay at 3:30.14. Spearfish took second in both races (and qualified for state), but the Spartan runners had to take a back seat to the Tigers. Mobridge-Pollock beat Spearfish by nearly two seconds in both races. The Tigers’ times are at the top of the leader board in Class A in the early season.
Daniel Roberts, while not setting any records, was just as dominant in the discus and shot put. Roberts threw the discus 179 feet, 10 inches and won the event by 20 feet.  He was just two inches behind the record 180-0 he threw last spring in Sturgis. His shot put went 54-2 and was three and half feet farther than the second place throw. Roberts in first in discus and third in shot put in the Class A standings.
Schaefbauer did not get an individual win, but he did qualify for state. Schaefbauer took fourth in the 400-meter with a state-qualifying time of 51.41 seconds (see Ball Five for further explanation). He added an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter.
Borah earned an individual medal by placing fifth in the 100-meter dash.
The Tiger relay teams rounded out a big day with two more places. The medley team of Borah, Keller, Conner Stoick and Jason Hill took third. The 400-meter team of Stoick, Heumiller, Keller and Reece Wientjes raced to fifth.
Steph Gemar led the Lady Tigers with a second-place finish in the discus. Gemar threw the disc 131-0, which met the state-qualifying mark and is currently the second longest throw in Class A.
Three Lady Tiger relay teams placed.
The 800-meter team of Alexa Schaefbauer, Kayla Schneider, Madison Rau and Maranda Wagner finished fourth. Schaefbauer, Schneider, Wagner and Cassi Heumiller took sixth in the medley. Heumiller, Wagner, Rau and Brandi Martian took eighth in the 1600.
“Everybody ran hard,” said Looyenga. “Considering the length of the day, they performed well.”
With the shortened season, Looyenga and his staff are working hard to make sure the Tigers and Lady Tigers keep improving meet to meet.
“We have some things we need to improve on,” said Looyenga. “There is nothing more I could ask of them on the physical part. We’re learning more of the mental part of the game.”
Looyenga compared learning to be mentally tough to the difference between going to perform at a meet and there might be some socializing as opposed to socializing and running when your named is called.
The head coach added that his staff of coaches deserves some kudos, too, as they have been a big part of the team’s early season success.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers will work combining the physical and mental aspects of the game three times over the next seven days. Mobridge-Pollock will compete the Lemmon Make-Up Track Meet on Thursday, the Ipswich Invitational on Saturday and the Eureka Legion Invitational on Tuesday. Next week the Tigers will perform at home when they host the Central South Dakota Conference Meet on May 11.
