MPHS student named Outstanding Actor

By Travis Svihovec

Lauren Brekke received the Outstanding Acting Award last Wednesday when the Mobridge-Pollock High School drama team competed at the regional meet in Pierre.

“She was told that she developed her character to believability,” coach Holly Hitland said. “The judges stated that she walked on stage and they knew who she was and what her demeanor was. That was what they were looking for.”

Lynda Martin was mentioned for her violin/fiddle playing at the opening of the play, which set the mood for the play. Jacob Fonkert and Trevor Jerome were also mentioned but the judges must agree in their decision.

The MPHS team did not advance to state competition. Stanley County took first and Chamberlain was second.

The group performed an adaptation of “The Three Strangers” by English Victorian writer Thomas Hardy.

“It was another successful season even though we didn’t advance,” Hitland said. “We will be losing seven seniors this year so next year’s team will be young. I believe the talent is just as strong and natural, though.”

Other team members are Alex Greger, Anna Netzer, Dylan Mickelson, Kayla Fred, Kirby Greger, Melissa May, Tyler Svihovec and Justin Yellow Horse.
