The Lady Tigers used improved times to inch closer to being where they want to be in time for postseason, while the banged up Tigers still took second place at the Eureka Legion Meet on Tuesday.
“The girls ran really well,” said coach Marty Looyenga. “They had some personal bests and the relays ran real well.”
Topping the achievement list was Brandi Martian, who went six inches higher than she has all year and four inches higher than her career best in the high jump. Even more important, when Martian cleared the bar at four feet, 11 inches, she earned automatic qualification for the state meet.
“She was excited,” said Looyenga.
Steph Gemar had her longest discus throw of the season at 137-4.5 to beat two of the premier Class B discus throwers in the state. Ipswich throwers Shekota Myer and Madison Kienow both had state qualifying throws, but could not keep up with Gemar. With her new mark, Gemar reclaims the top spot in the Class A standings.
The 1600-meter relay team of Cassi Heumiller, Martian, Maranda Wagner and Callie Slater ran a 4:27.43 to win their race. It was their fastest time of the season. They finished more than a second ahead of Ipswich.
The 800-meter team, Slater, Heumiller, ReAnne Kohlus and Keely Moriarty, took second place. The girls ran a 1:57.33. Kidder County, N.D., won at 1:54.26.
The girls piled on more points with 3200-meter relay team taking third. Kohlus took fourth in the 3200. Alexa Schaefbauer took sixth in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump. Moriarty took sixth in the 800. Tabitha Reule took sixth in the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter relay team came in sixth. Ashton Wiederholt added a seventh-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.
Despite Austin Borah and Conner Stoick running just once and Cody Schaefbauer not running at all, the Tigers still managed to rack up 87.5 points and take second place. Only Potter County with 110 points could muster more.
“They may not run on Saturday,” said Looyenga. He added that he has spoken to a number of coaches who are having the same problem. The injuries stem from the late winter and the odd training schedule teams have had to deal with.
“It’s just a matter of we need to get healthy,” said Looyenga.
The day turned out just fine for Daniel Roberts, who turned in season-best distances in the shot put and discus. He sent the discus 188-9 and beat runner-up Tate Nafziger of Potter County by 38 feet. The throw pushes Roberts’ lead in the Class A standings to more than 10 feet. Roberts also added a little distance in the shot put where he went 55-10.5. Nafziger was again the runner-up, coming in at 47-3.75.
Borah did run one race on the day and it was enough to win the 200-meter dash title. Borah just missed qualifying for state with a 23.16. The qualifying standard is 23.1. After that race his injured calf tightened up and he was forced to take the rest of the day off.
The medley relay team of Stoick, Mitch Heumiller, Mason Keller and Jason Hill picked up the Tigers’ fourth win of the day. The team ran a 3:58.01 and won the race by a big margin over Herreid-Selby Area’s 4:12.69.
The Tigers notched more points with Keller taking third in the 100 and 200 and Heumiller taking fourth in the 100. Daniel Hintz took third in the discus and fourth in shot put. Reece Wientjes took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles and triple jump and sixth in high jump. Justin Nobles took fourth in the 3200. Hill took fifth in high jump and the 3200-meter relay team took eighth.
Kristie Mettler of Timber Lake and Josh Raile of Eureka-Bowdle were named athletes of the meet.
Mettler won the long jump and triple jump, both in state-qualifying fashion. She went 16-2.75 in the long jump and 34-0 in the triple jump. She added a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash.
Raile did all of his work in field events, winning pole vault, long jump and triple jump. He won the pole vault at a season-best and state qualifying 11-6. His jump totals were 18-9.25 in the long and 38-10.5 in the triple.
Austin Iverson of Herreid-Selby Area set a new record in the 110-meter hurdles. Iverson blazed to a new record of 15.49 seconds. He broke the 15.69 Cody Kraft of Timber Lake set last year.
Macy Heinz of Ipswich was a big part of two record-setting performances. Running solo she set a new mark of 58.65 in the 400-meter dash. Running with Angela Heinz, Tara Heinz and Maci Gauer, the Tigers ran a 4:31.6 to break the medley relay record.
