Led by the 1600-meter relay team setting a new record, the Tigers swept the relays at the Central South Dakota Conference Meet at Tiger Stadium on Saturday.
The team of Austin Borah, Mitch Heumiller, Mason Keller and Cody Schaefbauer tore their four laps up and hit the finish line in three minutes, 28.31 seconds. The record was not an old one. Borah and Schaefbauer were on last year’s team when they ran a 3:29.6 with Peyton and Bailley Friesz.
The foursome also won the 800-meter relay in a time of 1:31.06. Heading into regions, the team leads Class A in both races.
Keller was on four winning relay teams. He ran with Heumiller, Conner Stoick and Jason Hill to win the 400 and Stoick, Borah and Hill to win the medley. Hill teamed with Cody Hanson, Justin Nobles and Riley Schott to win the 3200.
Heading into the postseason, the Tigers look like a team that is not feeling the effects of a handful of small injuries that had been slowing the team’s progress.
“For the most part, I think the injuries they were dealing with a couple weeks ago have been cleared up,” said coach Marty Looyenga. “Not that they aren’t hurting some, but they’re going to compete and run through it.”
Borah made a big jump in the 200. He won the race at 22.6 seconds. The time met the state-qualifying standard and is the fifth fastest 200 in Class A this year.
Daniel Roberts finished his home career with a pair of throwing wins. Roberts won the shot put at 51-0.5 and the discus at 177-11.5. Roberts heads to the postseason as the top-ranked discus thrower in the state. His season best 188-9 is the sixth longest discus throw in state history.
Jason Hill won a CSDC title in the high jump, clearing 5-7. Reece Wientjes cleared the bar at 5-6 to give the Tigers a 1-2 finish.
The Lady Tigers added two conference titles.
Steph Gemar dominated the field to win the discus with a throw of 129-7.25. She added a second-place finish in the shot put. With a season-best 137-4 has Gemar ranked first in Class A heading into the postseason.
The Lady Tigers could not pull off the kind of relay day the Tigers had, but they had a pretty good day with one win and four second-place finishes.
Alexis Schaefbauer, Maranda Wagner, Callie Slater and Cassi Heumiller teamed to run a 4:34.81 and win the medley relay.
Potter County used its depth to win both team titles. Despite winning just two events, the Battlers eked past the Tigers. Potter County scored 146 to 140 for Mobridge-Pollock. Potter County was more dominant in the girls’ division where the Battlers racked up 234 points. Sully Buttes was second with 119. The Lady Tigers scored 98 to take third.

Region 6A
The Tigers and Lady Tigers have a combined 10 state-qualifications heading into the Region 6A Track and Field Meet in Miller on Thursday.
Looyenga said that if his athletes perform to their capabilities on Thursday, there could be a whole lot of kids making the trip to Sioux Falls for the state meet.
“We’re anxious to see what they can do,” said Looyenga. “When we compare results from the beginning of the year, to where they are now, they’ve shown consistent improvement.”
The first and second place finishers in each event, plus anyone meeting the state-qualifying standards earn entry into the state meet.
Field events start at 11:30 on Thursday.
