Austin Borah and Cody Schaefbauer finished 1-2 in the 400-meter dash at the Region 6A Track and Field Meet in Miller on Thursday. The two Tigers will have a busy state meet as they are both running in four events.

With the pressure on to win or not go to state, the Lady Tigers came through at the Region 6A Track and Field Meet in Miller on Thursday.
The Lady Tigers won four of five relays and three individual events. Add a pair of second-place finishes in individual events and the fifth relay team coming in second in one meet, the Lady Tiger state meet team rose from Steph Gemar and Brandi Martian to 12 strong.
“They came through big time,” said coach Marty Looyenga. “We had some kids step up.”
The relay teams had a huge day with four wins and a runner-up finish. The Lady Tigers won the 400-meter, 800-meter, 1600-meter and medley races. Maranda Wagner ran on all four winning teams. Alexa Schaefbauer ran on the 400, 800 and medley teams. Kayla Schneider and Kylee Wagner ran on the 400 and 800 teams. Callie Slater and Cassi Heumiller ran on the 1600 and medley team. Brandi Martian ran with the 1600 team.
The 3200-meter team of ReAnne Kohlus, Ashton Wiederholt, Keely Moriarty and Mary Martin took second place.
Steph Gemar swept the shot put and discus. With a season-best throw of 137 feet, four inches, Gemar is ranked first in Class A heading into the state meet.
Schaefbauer earned her fourth gold by winning the region title in the long jump.
Schneider and Moriarty earned trips to state with second-place finishes, Schneider in the 200 and Moriarty in the 800.
The Lady Tigers finished in second place with 145 points. Miller won the region title with 161 points.
To get to the high point total, the Lady Tigers added four third-place finishes, two fourths, a fifth, a sixth and two eighths.
Wiederholt and Martian finished 3-4 in the 400. Moriarty took third in the 1600. Kohlus took third in the 3200 and eighth in the 300-meter hurdles.
Martin finished third in triple jump and sixth in long jump. Jo’L Pretends Eagle nabbed fourth in discus and eighth in shot put. Kylee Wagner leaped to fifth in long jump.

Tigers prep for state
Austin Borah led the Tigers to second place in team standings with two individual and two relay wins.
Borah won individually in the 200 and 400. Borah heads to state with the sixth fastest time in each event.
The Tigers strengthened an already strong state team with two more individual and a relay win, along with four second-place finishes.
Jason Hill won the high jump and Reece Wientjes won the triple and took second in the high jump and 300-meter hurdles. Daniel Hintz finished second in the shot put and discus. The medley team of Cody Schaefbauer, Mitch Heumiller, Mason Keller and Hill qualified for state by taking first place.
The Tigers also won the 400-meter, 800-meter and 1600-meter relays and Schaefbauer took second to Borah in the 400, in events where they already qualified for state.
With Daniel Roberts passing on region titles to give Hintz his chance to make it to state, the Tigers sacrificed some points but still managed to finish second with 153 points. Chamberlain won the team title with 183 points.
“The boys ran well, but we didn’t run this to win the region title, we ran to prep for state,” said Looyenga. “We wanted to compete, but we wanted to be healthy and ready for state.”
The Tigers added points with a number of athletes picking up region medals. Conner Stoick finished third in the 100 and sixth in the 200. Justin Nobles took fourth in the 3200, while Stephen Gemar took fourth in shot put and Wientjes took fourth in long jump. The 3200-meter relay team took fourth. Kenny Helm took eighth in the 3200 and triple jump, while Cody Hanson took eighth in the 800 and Riley Schott took eighth in the 800.
The Tigers will take a nine-man team to Sioux Falls this weekend, looking to duplicate or better last May’s state meet. The Tigers enter state with Roberts in discus and the 800-meter and 1600-meter relay teams, both ranked first in state. Roberts is also ranked third in shot put and Schaefbauer is ranked fourth in the 400.
“If the boys can perform up to their potential, we can match or better last year,” said Looyenga.
The Class A Track and Field Meet prelims are in Lennox on Friday before converging with Class AA and Class B for the finals on Saturday.
