Funeral services for Shirley Mae Ellis, 78, of Aberdeen, were held Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home of Aberdeen.
Burial was in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Shirley died on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at ManorCare Health Services of Aberdeen.
Shirley Mae Hanson was born Dec. 6, 1934, to Palmer and Helen (Eckholm) Hanson in Cloquet, Minn. She graduated from Cloquet High School in 1952.
She worked as an engineering secretary at Wood Conversion Company prior to her marriage to Wayne Ellis on Oct. 24, 1953. They moved to Atlanta, Ga., until 1955, when Wayne was honorably discharged from the Air Force.
The couple returned to Cloquet where Shirley was employed as a legal secretary, insurance agent and a homemaker through the years. In 1974 they moved to Aberdeen and purchased the Spur Lounge, which they owned and operated together.
After Wayne’s death in 1988, Shirley continued to operate the Spur Lounge until 1997. She sold the Spur and then moved to Mobridge. Shirley enjoyed playing darts, reading and golf in her younger years. She moved back to Aberdeen in 2009.
She loved and enjoyed her family.
Grateful for having shared Shirley’s life are her two sons, Randy (Sue Bentsen) Ellis of Piedmont and Robert (Patricia) Ellis of Omaha, Neb.; four grandchildren, Tyler Ellis, Laura (Matt) Palermo, Alissa Ellis and Ashlee Ellis; one great-grandchild, Noah Palermo; and one brother, Dennis (Cathie) Hanson of Lillian, Ala.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Palmer and Helen Hanson, and her husband, Wayne Ellis.
