Austin Iverson of Herreid-Selby Area heads over the second to last hurdle with a huge lead. Iverson won the state title in the 110-meter hurdles to help the Wolverines to the team championship at the State B Track and Field Meet in Sioux Falls on Saturday.

The Herreid-Selby Wolverines are the state champions for the first time as a sports co-op. The Wolverines used four first-place finishes to rack up 71 points and win the team title at the State B Track and Field Meet at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls on Friday and Saturday.
The field events were prosperous for Herreid-Selby Area as Dakota Thorstenson won two titles and Cooper Schaefbauer won one.
Thorstenson was not in the lead until his final attempt in the triple jump. On his sixth and final attempt of the day, Thorstenson ripped off a state-winning leap of 41 feet, 7 inches. The leap put him past Tyler Peterson of Wall who finished second at 41-2.
He won the high jump by clearing the bar at 6-6. Runner-up Austin Opdahl of Chester Area and third-place Tyler Frank of South Central each cleared 6-6, but both jumpers missed more attempts as the bar was raised.
Schaefbauer, like Thorstenson in the high jump, used consistency during the climb to win the pole vault title. Schaefbauer and Dustin Livingston of Irene-Wakonda each cleared the bar at 12-6. With fewer misses, Schaefbauer won the state title.
Austin Iverson gave the Wolverines their lone win on the track. Iverson blitzed the field to win the 110-meter hurdles. Runner-up Jesse Taylor of Kimball-White Lake came in 34 hundredths of a second later. Iverson added a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles.
Nick Larson finished his career by placing in two sprinting events. Larson raced to fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 100.
Larson and Iverson were huge players in the Wolverines taking second in state in two relays.
Logan Schaefbauer joined Larson, Iverson and Cooper Schaefbauer in the 400-meter and 800-meter relays. The team finished second to Viborg-Hurley in both races. The 400-meter relay was especially close. Viborg-Hurley ran a 44.86 to edge past the 44.92 run by the Wolverines. Viborg-Hurley won the 800 at 1:32.96 with Herreid-Selby Area running a 1:33.21.
The state champs’ final tally of 71 points was eight better than second-place. Viborg-Hurley scored 53 points and third place Parker scored 58.5.
The Lady Wolverines won medals in a field event and a relay.
Haylee Biel earned a second-place finish in the high jump. Biel cleared 5-3 in the high jump. She was bettered only by state champion Jackie Dethlefsen of Corsica-Stickney who cleared 5-4.
The team of McKenzie Frank, Grace Goehring, Kara Thorstenson and Kendra Thorstenson took seventh in the 3200-meter relay. The girls ran a 10:30.91. Ipswich won the race and the state title with a time of 9:58.37.
