Barrel racers dominate Winner rodeo

Madison Rau of Mobridge was part of a dominant foursome of barrel racers at the Winner Regional Rodeo over the weekend. Rau finished third, while Timber Lake racers Kailee Webb, Laura O’Leary and Jordan Bickel finished first, second and fourth, respectively.

Madison Rau of Mobridge was part of a dominant foursome of barrel racers at the Winner Regional Rodeo over the weekend. Rau finished third, while Timber Lake racers Kailee Webb, Laura O’Leary and Jordan Bickel finished first, second and fourth, respectively.

Four local girls hopped on their horses and dominated the barrel racing at the Winner Regional Rodeo Friday through Sunday.
Kailee Webb, Laura O’Leary and Jordan Bickel of Timber Lake and Madison Rau of Mobridge-Pollock finished first through fourth in the first go and the average to race past the field.
Webb won the average after taking first in the second go and second in the first go. Her 16.725-second run in the second go was the fastest of the rodeo. O’Leary was right with Webb, winning the first go and taking second in the second go and the average. Rau was consistent and fast, taking third in the first go, fourth in the second go and third in the average. Bickel finished fourth in the first go, seventh in the second go and fourth in the average.
Bickel had her standout performance in pole bending. She won the second go and took second in the first go to win the average and the pole bending title. She added a state finals qualification in a third event when she placed 10th in the second go of breakaway roping. Bickel teamed with Wyatt Fulton of Miller to take eighth in the second go and eighth in the average in team roping.
Webb had a great all-around rodeo, qualifying for the state finals in four events. Along with her barrel racing title, she placed in breakaway roping, goat tying and cutting. Webb took third in both goes to finish second in the average in cutting. She took third in the first go and ninth in the average in breakaway roping and added an eighth-place finish in the second go of goat tying.
O’Leary earned a second state qualification when she took fifth in the first go of pole bending.
Tatum Ward became the fourth Timber Lake barrel racer to earn state qualification when she placed 10th in the first go.
Sloan Anderson of Timber Lake qualified for the state finals by taking sixth in the first go of breakaway roping.
Jessi White of Timber Lake earned a trip to state by taking 10th in the second go of goat tying.

Cowboys
Pearson Wientjes of Mobridge-Pollock put his horse, rope and little brother to good use to land two state finals qualifications.
Wientjes used a time of 13.03 seconds to take first in the first go of tie-down roping. He finished third in the second go and second overall. Nolan Richie of Webster edged Wientjes for the title. Richie won the second go and edged Wientjes 26.3 to 26.77 in the average.
Pearson and Reece Wientjes earned their trip to state in the finals with an eighth-place finish in the first go of team roping.
Reece earned a trip on his own by placing eighth in the first go of tie-down roping.

Nolan Hall of Timber Lake had a big weekend. Hall took second in the first go and ninth in the second go to secure third place in the average.
Hall and Sloan Anderson had a successful run in team roping. They took fifth in the second go and sixth in average.
Jesse White of Tiospaye Topa rode to third in the second go and took eighth in the average. Jake Frazier of Timber Lake was right behind White, taking fourth in the second go and finishing ninth in the average.
The area’s cowboys and cowgirls will get another shot at state qualification at the Fort Pierre Regional Rodeo, which runs Friday through Saturday.
Individuals and teams earn their state finals qualifications by placing in the top 10 in either of the goes or the average in each event.
The South Dakota High School Rodeo Finals will be held in Belle Fourche on June 19 through 23.
