Rau wins barrels at Major James McLaughlin Rodeo

Madison Rau of Mobridge warmed up for the state high school finals by winning the barrel racing at the Major James McLaughlin Rodeo in McLaughlin on Saturday and Sunday.
Rau ran the barrels in 15.69 seconds. Her fast time was worth $492. Shelby Vinson of Worthing was second and Kailee Webb of Isabel was third. Area racers Nikki Brandt of McLaughlin and Colbee Mohr of Timber Lake finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Dupree cowboys finished 1-2 in saddle bronc riding. Shorty Garrett won the competition with a 74 and made $366. Kash Deal registered a 70 for second place and $303. Dillon Ducheneaux of Mobridge took fourth with a 62 to earn $177.
Krystal Marone of Isabel took second in goat tying. Her eight-second run was good for $204. Hallie Fulton of Miller won goat tying at 7.9 seconds to collect $272.
Jacque Murray of Isabel finished tied for second in ladies breakaway roping. Her run of 2.6 seconds earned $365. Shanna Anderson of Eagle Butte was fourth. Mohr collected her second check with a fifth-place finish. Kari Jo Lawrence of Mobridge came in tied for sixth.
John Hoven of McLaughlin took third place in senior men’s breakaway roping. Hoven went 2.9 seconds for $230. Jay Longbrake of Dupree finished fifth.
Jess Woodward of Dupree came in third in calf roping, where a run of 9.7 seconds was worth $194.
Other events winners were Lonny Lesmeister of Rapid City in bareback riding, Tyson Donovan of Sturgis in bull riding, Billy Gallino of Wasta in calf roping and senior men’s breakaway roping, Kaylee Nelson of Box Elder in ladies breakaway roping and Levi Hapney of Quinn in steer wrestling.
This weekend the cowboys and cowgirls of the SDRA are in Estelline for Estelline Rodeo Days on Friday and Saturday. Rau and the rest of the state’s high school rodeo athletes are in Belle Fourche where the South Dakota High School Finals Rodeo kicks off today and runs through Sunday.
