The Tiger golf team will start the 2013-14 Mobridge-Pollock High School sports season when they tee off at the Milbank Invitational tomorrow.
“I’m excited,” said coach Jason Weisbeck. “We’ve got a good mix of upper and lower classmen and a good mix of talent and potential.”
Seniors Tyler Villbrandt, Eric Looyenga and Mitch Heumiller and junior David Jensen will lead the Tigers. Villbrandt, Looyenga and Jensen played in the state meet last year. All four golfers have plenty state experience. Villbrandt and Jensen have each played at state three times. Looyenga has played in two straight state tourneys. Heumiller made it to state in 2010 and 2011 before taking last season off to play football.
“The seniors have shown a lot of leadership,” said Weisbeck. “The kids have put in some work. They have a lot of potential.”
The golf season is short this year, but the players have a good lineup of courses and teams they will meet. After the Milbank outing, the Tigers will host the Mobridge-Pollock Invitational next Thursday. They will play at invites in Aberdeen, Redfield and Winner. The Big Dakota Conference Meet, the pre-region and the Region 3A meet will all be played at Hillsview Golf Course in Pierre. The State A Tournament will be played at Central Valley Golf Course in Hartford.
“We really have a good schedule,” said Weisbeck. “We’ll play against a lot of different kids and see some different schedules. We get to play Pierre three times, including the region.”
Along with the aforementioned players, the Tiger golf team includes juniors Joey Heil, Tanner Jerome and Kenny Helm, sophomore David Beadle, freshman Thomas Thompson, eighth-graders Stone Jensen, Carson Keller, Dalton Faehnrich, Zach Faehnrich and Jaden Keller, seventh-graders Noah Fried and Jalen Hitland and sixth-grader Tobie Hieb.
