Golfers win Big Dakota Conference
By Jay Davis
No one won medalist honors, but the Tigers dominated the scoreboard after that in winning the Big Dakota Conference golf tournament in Pierre on Thursday.
Jayden Bruun of Winner was on fire, shooting a 35-35-70 to take medalist honors.
And then the Tigers took over. Mobridge-Pollock golfers controlled the next four spots in the tournament. David Jensen took second with a 38-39-77. Mitch Heumiller was third, Tyler Villbrandt fourth and Eric Looyenga fifth. Heumiller shot 80, Villbrandt 81 and Looyenga 82.
“This was the best showing from our golfers as a team thus far,” said coach Jason Weisbeck. “David was able to put together a good 18. It was fun to see Mitch play his best nine of the year and his golf career. Thirty-seven was a great score on the front nine.”
When the divots were replaced, the Tigers ran away from Winner and Chamberlain in team standings. The Tigers finished with a 320, 22 strokes better than Winner and 51 strokes ahead of Chamberlain.
“Overall our boys are constantly jockeying for position on the team,” said Weisbeck. “That competition keeps things interesting and fun. It will be fun to see what we can do come pre-region and region on this course.”
Joey Hiel just missed a top 10 finish. He shot 94 and came in 11th.
