The Tigers followed up their pre-region performance by taking second place at the Region 3A Golf Tournament at Hillsview Golf Course in Pierre on Monday.
“Overall I was very pleased with our performance,” said coach Jason Weisbeck. “We had a gorgeous day, couldn’t have scripted a better day really, and the kids took advantage of it.”
The Tigers shot 320, 13 strokes better than their round last week. It did not help them close the gap on region champ Parker. The Trojans shot 295, picking up 15 strokes from last week.
Tyler Villbrandt led the Tiger pride with a fifth-place finish, shooting a career best 38-38-76.
“It was fun to see Tyler play a personal best in region competition,” said Weisbeck.
David Jensen and Eric Looyenga joined Villbrandt in the top 10. Both shot 80 with Jensen taking eighth and Looyenga ninth.
All five Tigers finished in the group that automatically qualifies for state. Mitch Heumiller shot 84 for 12th and Carson Keller shot 85 for 15th.
Jayden Bruun of Winner won the region title with a 68. Parkston golfers finished second, third, fourth, sixth and seventh.
The Tigers will try to get their names on the leader board at the State A Golf Tournament at Central Valley Golf Club in Hartford on Monday and Tuesday.
“They realize they have a shot a placing in the state tournament,” said Weisbeck. “They know that those blow-up holes cannot affect the remainder of their round. At state every shot and every hole counts. I am looking forward to what they can accomplish next week.”
