Delma Ducheneaux Heldman earned her teaching degree at age of 17
Funeral services for Delma Ducheneaux Heldman, 83, of Wakpala, were held Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at the Wakpala Community Center.
Burial was at Ascension Cemetery, Blackfoot, under the direction of Stout Family Funeral Home of Mobridge.
Delma entered the spirit world Sept. 18, 2013, at Golden LivingCenter in Mobridge.
Delma Marie Heldman was born Jan. 24, 1930, at the old Cheyenne Agency to Joe and Rebecca (Hates Him) Ducheneaux. She attended grade school at Cheyenne Agency, graduating from Stephan Indian School. She went on to attend Northern State College, receiving her degree in elementary education at the age of 17.
Delma taught school for several years at Glencross Country School, Saddle Butte, and then taught Aunt Celeste for three years. When she came home on weekends, she would fly with J.D. Kesling in the plane. That is where she grew to love flying, eventually earning her pilot’s license. After her local teaching, she moved to Rapid City, where she worked for Aunt Henrietta Comstock before moving to Pensacola, Fla.
While in Florida, Delma met and fell in love with Les Heldman. They married and had Wally while in Florida. They returned to the Moreau River where Scott was born before moving to Akron, Ohio. While in Ohio, Delma and Les had six more children, JoEsther, Annie, Rebecca, Ruth, Dale and Claire.
Delma enjoyed being a wife, mother and homemaker. She moved back to Wakpala in 1985 to her present home where she resided up until the time of her passing.
Delma was a wonderful cook and seamstress who enjoyed being around her family. She loved family gatherings, entertaining, holiday dinners and ceremonies, many of which were held in her front yard.
Delma will be sorely missed by her children, JoEsther Parshall, Leslie Ann Iron Cloud, Rebecca, Stephanie, Ruth, Dale and Claire Heldman, and many adopted children; sisters, Irene Hagen, Karen Walker and Cynthia Fiddler; brother, Steve Ducheneaux; grandchildren, Leslie, Adam, Cody and Breanna Heldman, Daniel and Toni Marrotta, Sarah Heldman, Chantilly and K.C. Parshall and Amber Felix along with her special “Twin,” great-grandson Quintin; and many other great-grandchildren too numerous to list; hunka sister, Deb Tiger; hunka brothers, Tim Swimmer, Henry Takes the Gun, Dick Fox and Vincent Tiger; hunka daughters, Myra Lombard and Dianne Pay Pay; hunka sons, Clyde, Pete, Toby, Bill, Vaughn and Nefi Three Legs, Mitch Pay Pay, James Ducheneaux, Mike Wald Sr., Ray Demarco, David Tucker and Virgil Taken Alive.
Delma was preceded in death by her parents Joe Ducheneaux and Rebecca Culbertson, siblings Carl, Joe and Owen Ducheneaux, Angeline Pay Pay, Bernadine Wald and Celeste Medicine, sons Wallace and Scott Heldman and grandson Michael Marrotta.
