By Jay Davis
Potter County scored four long touchdowns in the fourth quarter to defeat Herreid-Selby Area 44-30 in the Class 9A quarterfinals in Gettysburg on Monday.
The teams were tied at 20-20 after three quarters. Potter County took a 26-20 lead on a 49-yard Chayce Hall to Luke Vogel pass play. The Wolverines answered right back when Cooper Schaefbauer capped a drive with a two-yard touchdown run. The Israel Argullin extra point gave Herreid-Selby Area a 27-26 lead with 6:11 left in the game. Logan Schaefbauer set the drive up with a 70-yard kickoff return.
And then Potter County scored three touchdowns in less than four minutes. They took the lead on the second play of their next possession when Hall dropped back and launched the ball downfield, where Tanner Heuer fought off a Herreid-Selby Area defender, snagged the ball and raced untouched the rest of the way for a 68-yard touchdown pass. After the Wolverines punted, the Battlers scored three plays later when Ryan Sundberg broke away and raced 76 yards to the end zone, giving Potter County a 38-27 lead. The final nail in the Wolverine’s coffin came three plays later when a lateral was muffed and Vogel picked it up, running 43 yards to the end zone. The defensive score gave the Battlers a 44-27 lead with 1:50 left on the clock.
The first three quarters were back and forth. The Wolverines led early when Austin Iverson scored on a 48-yard touchdown run on Herreid-Selby Area’s second possession.
While no more scoring took place in the first quarter, the Potter County defense started taking control of the game. Outside of Iverson’s long run, the Battlers held the Wolverines to just five yards and no first downs in the first half.
Potter County put the ball in the end zone three times in the second quarter. Hayden Simon opened the scoring on a one-yard run on the first play of the second quarter. Chayce Hall gave the Battlers a 14-7 lead, scoring from 11 yards out after the Battlers recovered a Wolverine fumble and went on a 40-yard drive. The Battlers’ third score came when Chayce Hall hit brother Colten Hall on a 15-yard pass play with five minutes left in the half.
The Wolverines found their offense in the third quarter and tied the contest with two touchdowns. Brady Fiedler scored the first touchdown from two yards out after the Wolverines drove 86 yards in 13 plays on their first possession of the second half. Logan Schaefbauer brought the Wolverines back to square one when he cut outside and raced down the sideline for a 54-yard touchdown on the last play of the third quarter.
The Battlers racked up 491 yards offense, 303 on the ground and 188 through the air. Chayce Hall ran for 122 yards and threw for 176. He was seven of 12 passing. Sundberg ran for 93 yards on just four carries. Mitch Hinckley added 48 yards rushing. Along with his rushing touchdown, Simon caught two balls for 39 yards and completed a pass for 12 yards.
Iverson led the Wolverines with 70 yards rushing. Logan Schaefbauer added 60 on the ground. Fiedler finished with 86 yards passing with Dakota Thorstenson catching three balls for 80 yards.
The Wolverines finish the season at 7-3.
