Herreid-Selby Area sweeps Ipswich to win district

Herreid-Selby Area scored the deciding points in three close sets to sweep Ipswich 3-0 and win the District 3B championship in Selby on Friday.
All three sets came down to the wire. Herreid-Selby Area won set one 25-22 and set two 26-24 before closing out the match with a 25-22 win in set three.
Haylee Biel played huge in the win. The middle hitter rotated from the back row to front at crucial times in all three sets. Biel scored the final point in each of the first two sets.
She finished the night 37 off 44 hitting with 19 kills, while defending the net with six blocks and serving a pair of aces. Jana Thorstenson added six kills on 15 of 16 hitting. Grace Russell handled the lion’s share of setting with an 80 of 83, 27-assist match. Kelsey Quaschnick had a match-high three aces on 22 of 23 serving. Abbey Fjeldheim led the back row defense with 12 digs. Russell had 11, while Thorstenson and Quaschnick had nine each.
The district title makes the Wolverines four-for-four since the co-op between Selby Area and Herreid began. They won the District 6B title in their first three years. The Wolverines defeated Ipswich in the last season’s 6B title match.
Tara Heinz and Ansley Sargent combined for 15 kills to lead the Ipswich offense. Angela Heinz and Taylor Peterson combined for 15 assists. Sargent led all defenders with 13 digs. Kristi Pond added 12 digs. Rachael Severson and Shelby Retzer had four blocks each.
