Tic-tac-toe, make it three in a row! The Herreid-Selby Area Wolverines captured their third straight region title, taking down Sully Buttes 3-1 in Onida on Tuesday.
The Wolverines started hot and won the first match 25-16. The Chargers bounced back for a 25-19 win in set two. Herreid-Selby Area found its groove again to win set three 25-21 and then fought off Sully Buttes for a 28-26, overtime win in set four.
“Going in we knew it was going to be a battle based on our last meeting with Sully Buttes,” said coach Jody Schmidt. “We struggled with nerves a bit, but the girls played hard and really united for the win.”
This was the season rubber match for the Wolverines and Chargers. Sully Buttes beat Herreid-Selby Area 2-0 to win the Yellowstone Trail Conference Tournament the first weekend of the season. The Wolverines turned around and beat the Chargers 3-1 in Selby on Oct. 22.
There was a point in the season when the goal of winning the region was far from most of the team’s thoughts. After starting the season 7-1, the Wolverines suffered a 3-9 streak to fall to 10-10. But they regrouped to win six of their last seven regular season matches, including the last four to gain the momentum needed for their postseason run.
“Not many people thought this group had a chance to make it back to the state tournament,” said Schmidt. “But because of their hard work, dedication and selflessness, they are going back for a third time. I am so proud to be their coach!”
Haylee Biel led the Wolverines with a dominating night at the net. Biel was 41 of 44 hitting with 27 kills. She added defense with seven blocks and 10 digs. Jana Thorstenson was 19 of 20 hitting with nine kills and Paige Feist was 11 of 12 with six kills. Grace Russell had a perfect night setting, going 99 of 99 with 40 assists. Kelsey Quaschnick led the serving with a 15 of 18, three-ace night. Abbey Fjeldheim led the back row defense with 18 digs.
Karlea Stahl led Sully Buttes with 25 kills, three blocks and 12 digs. Chloe Lamb and Briana Hyde added five kills each. Kayla Nelson set 25 assists.
Herreid-Selby Area will enter as the seven seed at the State B Volleyball Tournament in Huron on Nov. 21 through 23. They will face two seed Arlington in the final game of round one at 7:45 p.m.
