Tiger 195-pounder earns Faulkton repeat
By Jay Davis
Make it a repeat for the Tiger 195-pounder. Chase Schoenhard won his second straight Faulkton Invitational title on Saturday in Faulkton.
Schoenhard was one of three Tigers who placed. Jaden Madison took third-place at 138 pounds and Brett Lang took fourth-place at 220 pounds.
“It was not as tough a tournament as it has been in the past, but it is harder to place because they only give out four medals,” said coach Spencer Novotny. “We had some kids that were right there.”
Schoenhard needed just two wins to secure his championship. He put both wrestlers to their backs in the third period, pinning Braydon Peterson of Lemmon-McIntosh at 4:47 and Tristan Schmitz of Oakes at 4:52.
“Chase wrestled well and beat a really good Oakes kid,” said Novotny.
Madison suffered a second-round loss to eventual champion Garrett Rausch of Potter County and then came back strong to secure his third-place finish.
“Jaden wrestled very well,” said Novotny. “He came back tough and aggressive after his loss to Rausch.”
Madison opened with a pin over Clayton Remleitner of Aberdeen Central JV, but dropped his second match to Rausch. He dominated after that, pinning Dillon Ost of Oakes at 3:41 and Austin Wiley of Sully Buttes at 1:37.
Lang suffered two defeats at the hands of the same wrestler. Cole Kelly of Oakes beat Lang 4-1 in his first match and then beat him 6-1 in the third-place match. In between, Lang blew past Justin Obaniana of Warner-Northwestern 17-5.
“Brett wrestled the Oakes kid better the first time,” said Novotny. “We’re working on some adjustments Brett has to make now that he is wrestling 220 instead of heavyweight.”
Bray Harrison at 132 pounds and Killian Warner at 160 pounds both came within one match of making the medal bouts. Both wrestlers lost in the first round and then came back with two wins before losing out in their fourth matches.
Trace Rische picked up his first varsity win at 160 pounds and went 1-2 on the day. Joseph Avalos earned a win and went 1-2 at 170 pounds, while Justin Nobles at 113 pounds and Dalton Martian at 182 pounds suffered through 0-2 tournaments.
The Tigers face a big early-season challenge when they compete in the Linton Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
“It’s going to be a tough tournament,” said Novotny. “We want the guys to go up, wrestle aggressive and leave it all on the mat.”
