Ball will not fall in hoop in Lady Tiger loss to Timber Lake as Lady Tigers drop game to Lady Panthers
By Jay Davis
Timber Lake fought off the Lady Tigers for a 42-26 win at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gymnasium on Thursday.
It was a game that saw the Lady Tigers do their best work of the year as far as taking care of the basketball and running their offense, but the ball would not go into the bucket. Mobridge-Pollock spent the entire second half with shots that would not fall. On the other end, the aggressive defense put Timber Lake on the free throw line where the Lady Panthers took advantage.
The Lady Tigers pulled to within seven points at 30-23 on a Kaitlin Good Shield three-pointer early in the fourth quarter, but could draw no closer as the Lady Panthers scored 10 of their 12 fourth-quarter points from the free throw line to pull away. The only points the Lady Tigers could conjure up over the final eight minutes were two Good Shield three-balls. The Lady Panthers finished the game 19 of 27 from the free throw line, while the Lady Tigers hit just one of nine charity shots.
The big positive for the Lady Tigers was their ability to take care of the ball and get the chance to run their offense. Mobridge-Pollock won the turnover battle forcing 22 miscues out of Timber Lake, while committing just 19. The second half was the best when the Lady Tigers had just nine turnovers to 13 for the Lady Panthers.
“The girls are getting there,” said coach Ann LaMont. “Eventually, it will all fall into place.”
Timber Lake took a 23-14 lead after the first half, thanks to the shot shooting of Courtney Dahlgren, who hit five field goals and scored 14 points in the half. The Tiger held Dahlgren without out a basket in the second half, but the Lady Panther senior scored five more times from the free throw line and finished with a game-high 19 points. Jordan Bickel scored seven points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, while Sydnee Mettler and Loryn Schoelerman scored six points each.
Chelsy Hoffman led the Lady Tigers with 10 points, but missed much of the second half saddled with foul trouble. Good Shield and Aundrea Kramer scored six points each. ReAnne Kohlus grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
The Lady Tigers will square off against 3-0 Herreid-Selby Area at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Mobridge Rotary Classic.
The Wolverines are 2-1 against the Lady Tigers since the Herreid and Selby
Area co-op began in 2010. The matchup has seen a tipping of the scales in the first three years. The Lady Tigers dominated the first game 72-46 in 2010. Herreid-Selby Area eked out a 44-42 win in 2011 and then put a 74-20 whipping on the Lady Tigers last year.
