JAY DAVIS: Tigers/Lady Tigers highlight Rotary Classic

Share

The Tigers and Lady Tigers will both be looking up at taller players when they host the Mobridge Rotary Classic at Mobridge-Pollock High School Gymnasium on Saturday.
The 1-2 Tigers got warmed up to extreme height a bit when facing 6’8” Rease Logan of Potter County on Saturday, but it was nothing like Saturday when they will line up against Little Wound’s 7-footer Nathaniel Brown Bull, who will officially be the tallest player ever to play at the new gym on the hill. If that’s not enough, the Mustangs also have 6’6” Christian Young Bear.
The Tigers have handled bigger opponents pretty well so far this season. Despite the 1-2 record, 80-73 so far, including a 28-23 edge in the Potter County game. But it will take a herculean effort on Saturday to win the rebounding battle against Little Wound. The Tigers are going to have to use their athleticism and outside shooting to counter the two huge Mustang players. Plus, a little full court pressure and a quick up-and-down-the-court game might make the giants a little weary after just a few minutes.
The Lady Tigers have not been able to overcome their lack of height in the first two games. If that is going to change on Saturday, they will have to play outstanding basketball. Herreid-Selby Area has 6’0 Haylee Biel and 5’10 Jana Thorstenson protecting the boards. Their presence inside has been a big part of the Wolverines getting off to a terrific 3-0 start.
The Lady Tigers and Wolverines tipoff their game at 5:30 p.m. The Tigers and Mustangs play the Rotary Classic nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
Before the Tigers and Lady Tigers face their holiday challenges, there will be three early games.
The Timber Lake boys will play the Burke-South Central Cougars in the opening game at 11:30 a.m. The Panthers started the season at 2-0, but loss two straight this weekend. They will look to get back on the winning track against a Burke-South Central team that is off to an 0-2 start.
The Lady Panthers will take the court at 1:30 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s contest against Little Wound. Timber Lake beat Little Wound 61-39 in last season’s Rotary Classic. Timber Lake is 1-2 after beating Mobridge-Pollock on Thursday. Little Wound is 2-4 so far this season.
The annual Herreid-Selby Area vs. Dupree matchup tips off at 3:30. Dupree beat the Wolverines 75-52 last year at the Rotary en route taking third in state. Herreid-Selby Area is the favorite this time around. The Wolverines are off to a blistering 4-0 start. A completely revamped Dupree squad will have its hands full.
