Jensen captures Winner title

David Jensen led a contingent of nine Tigers placing with a first-place finish at the Winner Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday.
Jensen won the 195-pound division with three straight wins. After he pinned Mitchell Peterson of Hill City and Tyler Masat of Redfield-Doland, Jensen had to overcome an early injury to win the championship match.
“David cut his eye pretty good,” said coach Spencer Novotny. “He finished the match with just 12 seconds blood time left.”
The gash required stitches, but not before Jensen defeated Cameron Kostal of Mt. Vernon-Plankinton-Corsica 11-6 to claim the title. Jensen in ranked sixth in Class B at 195 pounds. Kostal is ranked eighth and Masat is ranked ninth.
Brett Lang went 2-1 and took on the top-ranked 285-pound wrestler in the championship. Lang pinned Geoffrey Devries of Philip Area and Colton Best of Winner to get to 27-0 Dan Stribral of Bon Homme-Scotland in the championship. Lang wrestled well and trailed 2-1, but got caught late and pinned at 5:45.
Chase Schoenhard lost a close 7-4 match to third-ranked Logan Ammons of Philip Area before settling for third place at 220 pounds. Chase started his day by pinning Hazen Winkler of Andes Central. After his loss to Ammons (who pinned fourth-ranked Scott Assman of Winner for the title), Schoenhard bounced back to pin Nick Wagner of Redfield-Doland and beat Kreg Kipplinger of Bon Homme-Scotland 11-1.
Bray Harrison came back after defeated to nab third place at 132 pounds. Harrison beat Chase O’Grady of Bon Homme-Scotland in the first round, but dropped a 5-3 decision to Kruz Knudson of Mt. Vernon-Plankinton-Corsica in the quarterfinals. Harrison cranked out three straight wins after that, beating Barrett Nelson of Redfield-Doland 12-2 and Denver Paul of Sunshine Bible Academy 7-4 before pinning Ty Bolton of Winner.
Isaac Olson and Andrea Murri had fourth-place finishes.
Olson used a pin over Trey Elshere of Philip Area and a 13-2 win over Carter Wegner of Redfield-Doland to take fourth at 120 pounds.
Murri won decisions over Hayden Medicine Horn of Andes Central (4-1) and Lucas Crownover of Bon Homme-Scotland (10-2) to take fourth at 160 pounds.
Jaden Madison and Jaden Shepherd took fifth place.
Madison pinned Taylor Watzel of Winner and beat Dieon Beardemphl of Redfield-Doland 10-1 for fifth at 126 pounds.
Shepherd sneaked into fifth at 113 pounds with a forfeit win after a pair of losses.
Dalton Martian finished sixth at 170 pounds with a 3-2 record. He picked up his wins by defeating Cahden Howrey of Sunshine Bible Academy 8-3 and Gage Skillingstad of Hill City 8-4.
The Tigers had to face some of the best wrestlers in the state throughout the tournament. Justin Nobles faced third-ranked Slas Sutera of Bon Homme-Scotland. Shepherd opened against number one-ranked Duncan Stoebner of Bon Homme-Scotland. Olson wrestled third-ranked Alex Caba of Bon Homme-Scotland and 10th-ranked Zach Ayers of Winner. Nathan Bauer wrestled third-ranked Jed Brown of Philip Area. Madison wrestled 11th-ranked Cameron Biggins of Winner. Killian Warner faced top-ranked Lane Blasius of Philip Area. Murri squared off against fifth-ranked Brandyn Middlesworth of Winner and 12th-ranked Ryan Yost of Redfield-Doland.
The Tigers finished fifth in team points with 128 points. They were 15 points behind fourth-place Redfield-Doland.
“We needed more bonus points,” said Novotny. “A couple more pins and we could have caught Redfield even though they placed 12 and we placed nine.”

The Tigers will compete in the Lee Wolf Invitational in Aberdeen on Saturday.
Seedings for the tournament will not be announced until Thursday.
