David Jensen and Chase Schoenhard wrestled to third-place finishes at the Lee Wolf Invitational on Saturday in Aberdeen.
“The kids wrestled well,” said coach Spencer Novotny.
Novotny said Jensen and Schoenhard came up big all day, even when they both lost narrow decisions to Class A wrestlers each ranked second in state.
“They were both in their matches in the semis and could have won them,” said Novotny.
Jensen opened the 195-pound division with a default win when Nick Claussen of Chamberlain was injured. In the semifinals, he went against Tyler Kleinsasser of Huron, ranked second in Class A. Kleinsasser edged Jensen 3-1. Jensen tore up his last two wrestlers, pinning Jesse Forman of Watertown at 4:52 and Jimmy Sharkey (ranked 10th in Class B) at the 2:25 mark.
Jensen is ranked seventh in Class B this week.
Schoenhard (ranked fourth in Class B) pinned Eric Page of Webster Area in his first match at 220 pounds. His semifinal match with Dalton Cox (ranked second in Class A) came down to the wire with Cox winning a 5-4 match. Schoenhard fired back to pin Jeremiah Johnson of Huron and then put away Scott Assman of Winner (ranked fifth in Class B) at 3:58 in the second period.
Brett Lang finished sixth at 285 pounds, but suffered a career-ending injury in the wrestlebacks. Lang opened with a pin over Kyle Blume of Redfield-Doland, but suffered a 12-2 loss to Chase Beitzel (ranked seventh in Class B) in the semifinals. He was leading Dane Stahl of Watertown 1-0 in his next match when he suffered a major ankle injury. Lang had to default that match and forfeit the next in taking sixth place.
Novotny said Lang’s injury will be felt by the team.
“This is a tough one to swallow,” said Novotny. “It’s tough losing a senior this late in his career. He’s worked so hard to get through injuries in the past.”
Isaac Olson at 120 pounds and Jaden Madison at 126 pounds wrestled to seventh-place finishes.
Olson was pinned by Trevor Hieb of Aberdeen Central (ranked fourth in Class A) in the first round before defeating Carter Canham of Potter County 11-3 in the next round. He lost a tight 5-4 match to Luke Smith of Potter County before beating Caleb Orris of Clark-Willow Lake 6-4 in the seventh-place match.
“Isaac had a big tourney,” said Novotny. “It was nice to see him wrestle well with the kid who might be the number one seed in the region (Smith).”
Madison went 3-2 for his seventh-place finish. He opened with a pin over William Johnson of Miller/Highmore-Harrold but was beaten by technical fall by John Lemer of Canton (ranked first in Class B). Madison pinned Barry Johnson of Miller/Highmore-Harrold and then dropped an 8-3 decision to Dawson Mathison of Webster Area.
In the seventh-place match, Madison pinned Cameron Biggins of Winner at 2:28.
“Jaden had a good tournament too,” said Novotny. “He avenged his loss to Biggins from the Winner tournament. He’s showing more offense.”
The Tigers suffered a second injury on the day when 160-pounder Andrea Murri got hurt during his second match. Although Murri wll be undergoing an MIR, Novotny fears the foreign exchange student’s Tiger wrestling career is over also.

Big Dakota
The Tigers will close out the regular season at the Big Dakota Conference Meet on Saturday in Ft. Pierre.
“This is a big tournament,” said Novotny. “The dual part of the season is over. It’s all about the wrestlers now.”
There will be 20 teams competing in the tournament. Along with Big Dakota regulars Mobridge-Pollock, Chamberlain, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Dupree, McLaughlin, Miller/Highmore-Harrold, Stanley County and Winner, in action will be Bennett County, Groton Area, Harding County, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes, Little Wound, Lyman, Parkston, Pine Ridge, Potter County, Sunshine Bible Academy, Todd County, Wessington Springs-Woonsocket and Wolsey-Wessington.
