David Jensen beat Herman Fennell III of Stanley County 4-2 in the semifinals before going on to take second place at 195 pounds at the Big Dakota Conference Tournament in Ft. Pierre on Saturday.

David Jensen and Chase Schoenhard wrestled to a pair of second-place finishes at the Big Dakota Conference Tournament in Ft. Pierre on Saturday.
Jensen raised his season record to 15-2 in taking second place at 195 pounds. After pinning Kibbie Reynolds of Todd County and Lonn Stadlman of Parkston, Jensen came up against fifth-ranked Herman Fennell III of Stanley County. Jensen scored a takedown late in the third period to secure a 4-2 win. In the championship, he faced off against third-ranked Reece Jensen of Harding County. The Rancher got the takedown and held Jensen off for a 4-1 win.
“We knew going in it was going to be an important weekend for David,” said coach Spencer Novotny. “Getting that last-second takedown against Fennell was huge. But he gave up the takedown and had to play catch-up in the championship. We talk about it all the time in the wrestling room. That first takedown is huge.”
Jensen finishes the regular season ranked fourth at 195 pounds.
Schoenhard advanced with a forfeit win before pinning Kelly Kidwiler of Winner (JV). He went up against fifth-ranked Scott Assman of Winner in the semis. The pair wrestled and wrestled and wrestled until Schoenhard won a 3-2 decision in four overtimes.
“Assman knew what we wanted to do. It was a well-coached match,” said Novotny. “They chose down and Chase had to ride him out for 30 seconds. It was a good match.”
The championship was a different story and number one-ranked and defending state champion Brady Reiff of Parkston made quick work of Schoenhard with a pin at 1:11.
“I don’t think Chase was ready for Reiff,” said Novotny.
At 36-6, Schoenhard is ranked fourth at 220 pounds.
The rest of the team came up short of competing in the medal rounds. Jaden Madison went 2-2 at 126 pounds, while Jesse Nobles at 106, Isaac Olson at 113, Bray Harrison at 132 and Joseph Avalos at 170 had one win each.

Postseason
The Tigers have the weekend off to prepare for the Region 4B Wrestling Tournament in Rapid City on Feb. 22.
“We’re banged up, but we have time to heal,” said Novotny. “Hopefully, by next weekend we’ll be tired of wrestling each other. It’s a new season. I know it’s cliché, but everybody is 0-0 now.”
The Tigers will be competing for trips to state against Bennett County, Custer, Harding County, Hill City, Hot Springs, Lead-Deadwood, Lemmon-McIntosh, Lyman, McLaughlin, Newell, Philip Area, Potter County, Red Cloud, St. Thomas More, Stanley County and Sully  Buttes.
